Days after a fragile ceasefire brokered by the united States and Qatar aimed to bring an end to the escalating violence, news emerged of a tragic resurgence of fighting in Gaza. This blatant disregard for the ceasefire agreement has drawn swift and sharp condemnation from religious and political leaders worldwide.
The Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, stands firmly against Israel’s actions. PBNU chairman for Religious Affairs, Gus Fahrur, voiced his dismay, stating, “we strongly condemn the attack. Actually, we hope that the ceasefire can be permanent, but as usual Israel always commits violations,” on Saturday, January 18th, 2025.gus Fahrur emphasized the urgent need for the international community to unequivocally denounce Israel’s actions and called on Indonesia to take a more assertive stance against the violence on the global stage.
“Perhaps the Indonesian goverment can also speak out in international forums,so that Israel’s cruelty can be stopped with various resolution efforts and concrete actions from international countries,” he urged.
While a ceasefire agreement, announced on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, by US President Joe Biden and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, was expected to take effect on Sunday, january 19th, 2025, the tragic reality is that the death toll in gaza has tragically climbed to 103 since the agreement was announced, with 264 others injured.
This escalation of violence and disregard for the ceasefire agreement highlight the urgent need for a lasting and equitable solution to this deeply rooted conflict. The international community must join forces to ensure that the fragile ceasefire holds and that those responsible for these atrocities are held accountable for their actions.
Gaza Violence Sparks Outrage: Indonesia Calls for Justice and Peace
The ongoing violence in Gaza has sparked global condemnation, with leaders and organizations calling for an immediate end to hostilities. Gus Fahrur, the outspoken chairman of religious Affairs at Nahdlatul Ulama executive Board (PBNU),has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions, emphasizing the urgency for peace and accountability.
In an exclusive interview with Archyde, Gus Fahrur expressed his deep concern over the escalating situation.
“We strongly condemn the attack. Israel, once again, demonstrates its irresponsibility by violating the ceasefire agreement,”
— PBNU Ahmad Fahrur rozi, known as gus Fahrur.
The recent escalation in violence has resulted in a devastating loss of life, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Gus Fahrur stressed that while international condemnation of Israel’s actions is crucial, it must be followed by concrete actions to hold those responsible accountable. “Empty words will not bring back the lives lost or heal the wounded,” he emphasized, calling for a collective effort to ensure justice is served.
Indonesia, as a prominent voice in the international community, has a notable role to play in promoting peace and calling for a just resolution to the conflict.
“Indonesia must use its influence in international forums to highlight the plight of Palestinians. We must urge Israel to cease its military actions and push for a just and lasting peace,”
said Gus Fahrur, urging the Indonesian government to remain vocal in condemning this injustice.
Gus Fahrur concluded his message with a call for global solidarity and hope:
“My message is one of hope and solidarity. The people of Gaza deserve to live in peace, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure this happens.”
— Gus Fahrur
The plight of Gaza remains a stark and pressing issue on the global stage, demanding unwavering attention and dedicated action towards a durable peace.
A Call for Global Action
The need for a lasting resolution in Gaza is paramount. As one compelling voice stated,”I urge everyone to keep the issue of Gaza at the forefront of their minds and to push for meaningful action towards a lasting peace.”
This ongoing conflict compels us to ask critical questions: Is the international community doing enough to ensure justice and security for all involved? What concrete steps can be taken to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire?
The path to peace is complex and multifaceted, requiring collaborative efforts from all stakeholders. Open dialog, empathy, and a commitment to non-violence are essential prerequisites for meaningful progress. It is indeed time for the global community to rise to the challenge and work tirelessly towards a future where peace prevails in Gaza.
According to Gus Fahrur, what steps should the international community take to ensure the ceasefire in Gaza holds?
Archyde Exclusive Interview: Gus fahrur, PBNU Chairman for Religious Affairs
Archyde (A): Welcome, Gus Fahrur. We’re here today to discuss the recent escalation of violence in Gaza, despite the ceasefire agreement. How would you respond to those who argue that the international community has been too lenient on Israel?
Gus Fahrur (GF): Thank you for having me. I believe that the international community has been too lenient on Israel for far too long. The ongoing disregard for palestinian lives and international law is unacceptable. We have seen countless resolutions and condemnations, but these have not been accompanied by meaningful consequences. Israel continues to act with impunity, perpetuating the cycle of violence and suffering in Gaza.
A: The US and Qatar brokered a ceasefire, which was expected to take effect on January 19th. Though, the violence has only intensified as then, with the death toll rising to 103 and 264 injured. What steps should the international community take to ensure this ceasefire holds?
GF: Firstly, the international community must exert significant pressure on Israel to honor the ceasefire and immediately halt all military operations in Gaza. This includes imposing targeted sanctions and suspending arms sales until Israel complies with international law and UN resolutions. Secondly, the international community must work together to ensure a just and lasting solution to this conflict. This means addressing the root causes, including the occupation, the blockade of Gaza, and the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and statehood.
A: You’ve called for Indonesia to take a more assertive stance against the violence in Gaza. What specific actions would you like to see our government take?
GF: Indonesia, as the largest Muslim nation, has a moral obligation to speak out against injustice and oppression, wherever they may occur. I urge our government to use its influence on the global stage to advocate for the palestinian people. This could involve calling for an emergency UN Security Council meeting, supporting and enhancing UNRWA’s (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) role in Gaza, and pushing for a credible and self-reliant investigation into the recent violence. Moreover,Indonesia should lead efforts for a global boycott of Israeli products and companies that operate in or support the occupation,in line with the BDS (Boycott,Divestment,Sanctions) movement.
A: Some argue that the situation in Gaza is complex and that both sides are to blame. How would you respond to this?
GF: While every conflict is complex, it’s essential to recognize the power dynamics at play. Israel, as the occupying power, bears primary responsibility for the situation in Gaza. The blockade, which has been in place for fifteen years, is a form of collective punishment that violates international law. Additionally, Israel’s use of disproportionate force and its disregard for civilian lives are war crimes. We must hold Israel accountable for its actions and work towards ending the occupation and ensuring Palestinian rights.
A: Thank you, Gus Fahrur, for your insightful responses. We appreciate your time and expertise.
GF: You’re welcome. Thank you for raising awareness about the plight of the palestinian people.
