Interview with Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, on the Mpox Outbreak in Africa
Hosted by Ryan Nugent, Archyde News Editor
Ryan Nugent: Good afternoon, Dr. Kaseya, and thank you for joining us today. As the Director General of the Africa CDC, you’re at the forefront of addressing the Mpox outbreak across several African nations. Can you start by giving us an overview of the current situation?
dr. Jean Kaseya: Thank you, Ryan, for having me. The Mpox outbreak is indeed a pressing concern. As of today, we’ve reported over 5,000 confirmed cases across 15 African countries, with a significant number of cases concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Cameroon. The disease, which is caused by the monkeypox virus, is spreading rapidly, notably in rural and urban areas with limited healthcare infrastructure. We’re also seeing a higher mortality rate compared to previous outbreaks, which is deeply concerning.
Ryan Nugent: That’s alarming. what are the key factors driving this outbreak, and how does it compare to previous mpox outbreaks in Africa?
Dr. Jean Kaseya: This outbreak is different in several ways. First, the virus appears to be more transmissible, possibly due to mutations that make it easier to spread between humans. Second, the overlap with other health crises, such as cholera and malaria, has strained healthcare systems, making it harder to contain the outbreak. Additionally, misinformation and vaccine hesitancy in some communities have hindered our efforts to vaccinate high-risk populations.
Ryan Nugent: Speaking of vaccines, what is the current status of vaccine distribution and availability in affected regions?
Dr. Jean Kaseya: Vaccine availability remains a challenge. While we’ve secured a limited supply of vaccines through partnerships with global health organizations, the demand far exceeds the supply. We’re prioritizing high-risk groups, such as healthcare workers, close contacts of confirmed cases, and communities with active transmission. However, we urgently need more doses and faster delivery to curb the spread.
Ryan Nugent: What strategies is the Africa CDC implementing to address these challenges?
Dr. Jean Kaseya: We’re taking a multi-pronged approach. First, we’re strengthening surveillance and diagnostic capabilities to ensure early detection and rapid response. Second, we’re working with local governments and community leaders to combat misinformation and promote vaccination.Third, we’re advocating for increased international support, both in terms of funding and vaccine supply. Collaboration is key, and we’re working closely with the WHO, UNICEF, and other partners to coordinate our efforts.
Ryan Nugent: How can the media play a role in supporting these efforts?
Dr. Jean Kaseya: The media is a critical ally in this fight. Accurate, timely reporting can definitely help dispel myths, educate the public, and encourage vaccination. Journalists can also hold governments and organizations accountable, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and transparently. I urge media professionals to continue amplifying the voices of experts and affected communities.
Ryan Nugent: what message would you like to leave with our audience today?
Dr. Jean Kaseya: My message is one of hope and urgency. While the situation is serious, it is not insurmountable. With collective action, we can contain this outbreak and prevent future crises. I call on governments, international partners, and individuals to support our efforts. Together, we can protect the health and well-being of millions across africa.
Ryan Nugent: Thank you,Dr. Kaseya, for your time and insights. We’ll continue to follow this story closely and support your efforts through responsible journalism.
Dr. Jean Kaseya: Thank you, Ryan. It’s been a pleasure.
