Roz Purcell, teh renowned model and influencer, recently made headlines by sharing her journey of breaking a two-decade-long habit. During a luxurious beach getaway in Zanzibar, the 34-year-old decided to ditch fake tan entirely, marking a significant personal milestone.
Roz and her fiancé, Zach Desmond, began their year with an unforgettable two-week adventure. The couple explored Tanzania’s breathtaking landscapes, embarking on safaris across Lake manyara National Park, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti. After their wildlife escapades, they jetted off to Zanzibar for some well-deserved relaxation.
For the first time in 20 years, Roz chose to go completely tan-free during her vacation. She proudly showcased her natural pale skin in stunning beach photos, captioning one of them: “Beach holiday + no fake tan, I might have just broken the 20-year addiction.”
In a candid instagram story, Roz opened up about her experience. “I think I have officially broken up with tan,” she said. “did I bring some sneaky tan with me on holiday in case I needed it? Yes, I did.But I have managed to stay completely pale for two weeks in Tanzania, including three days on a beach in Zanzibar. Never thought I’d be able to do it.”
She humorously added, “Am I the palest person here? Absolutely. Every day on the beach, I am actually whiter than the sand. The sand has a better tan than I do. But you know what? I feel clean. I feel a little bit insecure still, but I’m just going for it. I can’t believe I whent so cold turkey. I really thought I would have failed by now, but here we go.”
roz hopes her journey will inspire others to embrace their natural skin tone. “So hopefully, it’ll encourage some other people to just rock out your pale skin. It’s really not that bad,” she concluded.
This isn’t the first time Roz has spoken about her relationship with fake tan. The former Miss Ireland Universe once joked about her past obsession, admitting she was “orange for ten years” during her pageant and modeling days. Though, she’s now fully embracing her natural beauty, and her fans couldn’t be more supportive.
Roz’s story is a refreshing reminder that self-confidence frequently enough comes from embracing who we truly are. Her bold decision to go tan-free has not only inspired her followers but also sparked a broader conversation about beauty standards and self-acceptance.

Archyde: Roz, thank you for joining us today. You’ve recently made headlines for a deeply personal decision—ditching fake tan after two decades. What inspired this change during your trip to Zanzibar?
Roz Purcell: Thank you for having me! it’s been quite a journey. Honestly, it was a combination of things. Being in Zanzibar, surrounded by such natural beauty, made me reflect on how much time and energy I’ve spent over teh years trying to alter my appearance.I realized I was hiding behind something that didn’t truly reflect who I am. It felt like the perfect moment to let go and embrace my natural skin tone.
Archyde: That’s incredibly brave. Was there a specific moment during your trip that solidified this decision?
Roz Purcell: Absolutely. One morning,Zach and I were walking along the beach at sunrise. The light was so pure, and I just felt this overwhelming sense of peace. I looked at myself in the mirror later that day and thought, “Why am I covering this up?” It was a moment of clarity—I wanted to feel agreeable in my own skin, literally and figuratively.
Archyde: You’ve been in the public eye for years as a model and influencer. How has the response been from your followers and the industry?
Roz Purcell: it’s been overwhelmingly positive, which I’m so grateful for. I think people appreciate honesty and vulnerability. Many of my followers have shared their own stories about struggling with self-image, and it’s been amazing to connect with them on a deeper level. As for the industry, there’s definitely a shift happening. More brands are embracing diversity and natural beauty, which is encouraging.
Archyde: That’s fantastic to hear. Speaking of your trip, you and Zach had quite the adventure in Tanzania before heading to Zanzibar. What was the highlight of your safari experiences?
Roz Purcell: Oh, it’s hard to pick just one! The Serengeti was absolutely magical—seeing lions, elephants, and giraffes in their natural habitat was surreal. But I think the most memorable moment was in Ngorongoro Crater. We watched a herd of wildebeest migrating at sunset, and it was like something out of a documentary. It reminded me how gorgeous and raw nature can be.
Archyde: Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Now that you’re back, how are you adjusting to life without fake tan? Any challenges?
Roz Purcell: It’s been an adjustment, but a liberating one. I’ve had to relearn how to dress for my natural skin tone and find confidence in a different way. There are moments when I catch myself reaching for the tanning products out of habit, but I remind myself why I made this choice. It’s about self-acceptance and being authentic.
Archyde: That’s such an empowering message. What advice would you give to others who might be struggling with similar insecurities?
Roz Purcell: I’d say, take it one step at a time. You don’t have to make a grand gesture like I did—it could be as simple as going makeup-free for a day or wearing something that makes you feel good without worrying about what others think. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, and remember that true beauty comes from within. It’s cliché,but it’s true.
Archyde: Wise words, Roz. what’s next for you? Any exciting projects on the horizon?
Roz Purcell: I’m working on a new book that dives deeper into my journey with self-image and wellness. it’s been a cathartic process, and I hope it resonates with others. I’m also collaborating with a few brands that align with my values of authenticity and sustainability. And, of course, more adventures with Zach—we’re already planning our next trip!
