By Archys, Archyde Sports Editor
Following his game-winning overtime goal that secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory for the Washington Capitals against the Ottawa Senators, legendary forward Alexander Ovechkin sat down with Archyde for an exclusive interview. The Russian sniper discussed the gritty win, the rise of young talent like Leevi Merilainen, and his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record.
Archyde: Congratulations on the win, Alex! that was a hard-fought battle. what was going thru your mind heading into overtime?
Alexander Ovechkin: Thank you! It was a tough game, there’s no doubt whatsoever. Ottawa played exceptionally well defensively, and their goalie, Merilainen, was outstanding.Heading into overtime, I just knew we had to stay patient and wait for the right moment. we’ve been in those situations before, and it’s all about execution.
Archyde: Speaking of Merilainen, you’ve faced some incredible goaltenders in your career. What were your impressions of the young netminder?
Ovechkin: oh, he’s a special talent. For a kid with only eight NHL games, he played like a veteran. He made some big saves and really kept Ottawa in the game. It’s always exciting to see young players step up and perform like that. he’s got a shining future ahead of him.
Archyde: Your goal in overtime marked your 21st of the season and yet another clutch moment in your career. What drives you to keep performing at such a high level after all thes years?
Ovechkin: It’s my love for the game, plain and simple. I’ve been blessed to play this sport for so long, and I never take it for granted. Every goal, every win, it’s about contributing to the team and helping us succeed. I still have that fire and hunger to compete every night.
Archyde: the Capitals are known for their offensive firepower, but this game was a defensive battle. How important is it for the team to win in different ways as you head deeper into the season?
Ovechkin: it’s crucial. You can’t always rely on scoring five or six goals. There are nights when you have to grind it out, play tight defensively, and capitalize on your chances. This win showed our resilience and our ability to adapt. It’s those kinds of victories that build character and prepare you for the playoffs.
Archyde: You’re now just [insert number] goals away from Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL record. How does it feel to be so close to making history, and how do you stay focused amid all the attention?
Ovechkin: [Laughs] It’s definitely a special feeling to be in this position. Wayne’s record is something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid, but I try not to focus on it too much. My priority is helping the team win games. The goals will come if I stay true to my game and keep working hard.
Archyde: what’s the mood like in the locker room right now? The Capitals are having a great season. What’s the mindset as you look ahead?
Ovechkin: The mood is great. We’ve got a mix of veterans and young guys, and everyone is pulling in the same direction. We’re focused on staying consistent and peaking at the right time. There’s still a lot of hockey left to play, but we’re confident in our group and what we can accomplish.
With his 21st goal of the season, Ovechkin continues to defy age and expectations, inching closer to hockey immortality.
