Discontent is brewing among Russia’s elite over President Vladimir Putin’s handling of the Ukraine conflict. Independent investigations reveal growing frustration within the ruling class, particularly over the prolonged nature of the war.”They are really deeply disappointed in the outcome of the war,” says Russia correspondent Joost bosman.
Russian Elite Expresses Frustration Over Putin’s War Strategy
Meduza, an independent news outlet, conducted interviews with approximately ten high-ranking individuals from Russia’s political and administrative circles. These included government officials, Putin advisors, and regional governors. The findings highlight a widespread weariness with the ongoing conflict and a sense of disillusionment over its lack of resolution.”Previously, telephone conversations were leaked in which wealthy businessmen from Russian society criticized Putin, but it is still startling news,” notes Bosman.
Despite the growing dissatisfaction, experts believe it is unlikely to significantly alter Putin’s policies. Bosman points out that the influence of oligarchs was curtailed decades ago.”putin gave these oligarchs an ultimatum: earn your money but don’t get involved in politics,” he explains. The current administrative critics, who spoke anonymously due to fears of reprisal, are also unlikely to shift the Kremlin’s stance. “If they speak out, they are in enormous danger,” Bosman adds.
Meanwhile, support for Putin remains robust among the affluent middle class in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. “The liberal elite, who frequently enough had a different view of things, fled the country,” Bosman observes. “Those who stayed behind can make their money under Putin and therefore also support him.”
