Indonesia is gearing up too ⁢reduce trade tariffs with the United States⁢ as President-elect Donald Trump moves ‌forward‌ with his plan to introduce a universal tariff policy.‍ This‌ strategic decision aims to ease potential trade ⁤tensions ⁢adn foster stronger economic ties between the two nations.

For years, several Indonesian products have ⁤been ‌subject to U.S. import tariffs, highlighting a complex trade relationship that coudl ‌become even more‌ strained under Trump’s administration. ‌The proposed tariff reduction emerged as a key topic during the Indonesia Business Competitiveness Outlook ⁢2025 Conference in Jakarta earlier this week.‌ Airlangga Hartarto, the ‍country’s Economic Minister, ⁤unveiled the plan as part of ⁣a broader effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation and soften the blow of potential tariff hikes.

“Indonesia is requesting bilateral economic cooperation to reduce tariffs,” Hartarto stated, emphasizing the ⁢need for⁣ collaborative solutions to safeguard trade ‌interests.

The timing of this move⁤ is crucial, as Trump recently pledged to impose⁤ a⁣ 100% tariff on BRICS member nations if they proceed⁤ with plans to create a rival⁢ currency to⁤ the U.S. dollar. indonesia’s recent entry into BRICS, just days before Trump’s inauguration, has heightened concerns about the future of Indonesia-U.S. trade relations.

However, Hartarto noted that U.S. tariffs on ⁣Indonesian goods ⁣are not ‍a new phenomenon. Disparities ⁤in U.S. tariff policies have long affected products⁢ like shoes, apparel, and other commodities.Despite these challenges, the trade relationship between the two countries remains strong. In 2023, bilateral trade ‌reached $34.5 billion, with⁣ Indonesia enjoying‌ a $12 billion surplus.‌ From⁤ January to October‌ 2024,trade‍ volumes stood ‌at $31.6 billion, maintaining an $11.5 billion surplus for ⁣Indonesia.

During his first presidency,Trump ordered ⁢a review of indonesia’s eligibility for the U.S. ‍Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), citing the trade deficit. The GSP, a⁤ trade preference program ‍designed to support ⁢developing ⁤nations, expired in 2020 and is⁤ still awaiting⁢ congressional renewal.

As both nations navigate these complex⁢ trade dynamics, Indonesia’s proactive approach ⁢underscores its commitment to maintaining a robust ⁢and mutually beneficial economic ⁢partnership with the United states.
