Miami University Launches 24/7 Mental Health Support for Students

OXFORD, Ohio — Miami University is taking a bold step forward in addressing student mental health with the introduction of a 24/7 crisis support service. Partnering with Crisis Text Line, the university will provide students with immediate access to trained volunteers through text messaging, web chat, and WhatsApp. This initiative, set to launch on January 27, aims to meet the growing demand for accessible mental health resources among young adults.

Dr.Steve Large, assistant vice president for Student Health & Wellness, highlighted the importance of this service. “Students have expressed a strong preference for text-based support over traditional phone calls,” he said. “Many feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar with calling for help,so this tech-driven solution bridges that gap effectively.”

The program was made possible through a $1 million grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, specifically allocated for student mental health initiatives. the funding reflects the state’s commitment to addressing the mental health crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Miami H.O.P.E., a student-led support group, played a pivotal role in advocating for this service, emphasizing its potential to provide discreet and immediate assistance.

“There are moments when you’re in the middle of class, and an anxiety attack hits. You just need to step out and get help without drawing attention,” shared Emma Halcomb, a senior involved with Miami H.O.P.E. “This service offers that privacy and convenience.”

The Crisis Text Line will be available in both English and Spanish, ensuring inclusivity for a diverse student population. Students can reach out via text, web chat,or WhatsApp,making it easier than ever to seek help during moments of crisis.

Caleb Nelson, another Miami H.O.P.E. senior, expressed hope for the program’s broader impact. “I hope this initiative spreads to universities across the country and around the world. Mental health support is crucial for everyone, and this is a notable step in the right direction.”

As students return to campus, the launch of this service marks a milestone in mental health accessibility. By leveraging technology and student feedback,Miami University is setting a precedent for other institutions to follow.

Professional Interview with Dr. Evelyn Carter: Climate Action, Innovation, and Hope for the Future

interviewer: Dr. Evelyn Carter, thank you for joining us today. Your work in climate science and renewable energy has been nothing short of transformative. Let’s dive right in. Miami University recently launched a 24/7 mental health support service for students, which highlights the importance of accessibility and innovation in addressing critical issues. How do you see parallels between this initiative and the work you’re doing in climate action?

Dr. Evelyn Carter: Thank you for having me. That’s a interesting question. The parallels are striking. Both initiatives are about accessibility and meeting people where they are.Just as Miami University recognized that students prefer text-based mental health support over customary phone calls, we in climate science must recognize that solutions need to be accessible, inclusive, and tailored to the needs of diverse communities. Whether it’s mental health or climate action, the key is to remove barriers and make support and solutions as seamless as possible.

Interviewer: That’s a great point. Speaking of accessibility, your work focuses heavily on renewable energy technologies. Could you share some of the most exciting breakthroughs you’ve seen recently?

Dr. Carter: Absolutely. One of the most promising areas is the development of perovskite solar cells. These cells are not only more efficient than traditional silicon-based ones, but they’re also cheaper to produce. this could revolutionize solar energy, making it more accessible to communities worldwide. Another exciting advancement is in energy storage, notably solid-state batteries. These batteries address the intermittency issues of renewable energy, making it more reliable and scalable. And let’s not forget green hydrogen—it’s a game-changer for industries like shipping and aviation, which have been historically tough to decarbonize.

Interviewer: Those are incredible advancements. But as you’ve mentioned, technology alone isn’t enough. Collaboration across sectors is crucial. How do you see this playing out in the fight against climate change?

Dr. carter: Collaboration is the backbone of meaningful progress. Climate change is a complex, multifaceted challenge that no single group can tackle alone. Scientists can develop groundbreaking technologies, but without policy support and private-sector investment, those innovations may never reach the people who need them. That’s why I’m a strong advocate for platforms that foster dialog—international climate summits, public-private partnerships, and even university-led initiatives like Miami H.O.P.E. These spaces allow us to break down silos and create incentives for cross-sector cooperation. For example, governments can offer tax breaks for companies investing in lasting R&D, and universities can train scientists to communicate effectively with policymakers.

Interviewer: That’s a powerful vision. Speaking of universities, Miami University’s mental health initiative was made possible thru a $1 million grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education. How critically important is funding in driving climate action, and what role do you see for state and federal governments in supporting these efforts?

Dr. Carter: Funding is absolutely critical. Just as the Ohio Department of Higher education recognized the importance of mental health support for students, state and federal governments must prioritize funding for climate action. This includes not only research and development but also implementation and education.Grants and funding can catalyze innovation, but they also send a message that these issues matter. It’s about creating a culture of investment in our future—whether that’s the mental well-being of students or the health of our planet.

Interviewer: You’ve mentioned the importance of hope and empowerment in your work. How do you stay optimistic in the face of such a daunting challenge?

Dr. Carter: it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of the climate crisis, but I find hope in the progress we’ve made and the people I work with every day. Every breakthrough, every partnership, every small step forward reminds me that change is possible. I also believe in the power of individual action.Just as Miami University’s mental health initiative empowers students to seek help, we can all take steps—big or small—to contribute to a sustainable future. Whether it’s reducing our carbon footprint, advocating for policy change, or simply spreading awareness, every action matters.

Interviewer: That’s a beautiful viewpoint. what message would you like to leave our audience with today?

Dr. Carter: My message is one of hope and determination. The challenges we face are significant, but so is our capacity for innovation and collaboration. Together, we can create a future where both people and the planet thrive. It won’t be easy, but it’s absolutely possible.Let’s keep pushing forward, one step at a time.

Interviewer: Thank you, Dr. Carter, for your inspiring words and tireless work. We’re grateful for your time and insights.

Dr. Carter: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure.
