MANILA – The Office of Civil Defence (OCD) has urged local officials in Bago and La Castellana, Negros occidental, to rethink their decision to permit over 4,000 evacuees to return to their homes near mt. Kanlaon. The volcano, which experienced a significant eruption on December 9, 2024, continues to show signs of heightened activity, raising concerns about a potential larger eruption.

OCD Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno stressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “We must take anticipatory actions to prepare for the worst-case scenario of a more violent eruption. achieving zero casualties is our utmost priority.” His remarks were part of a press release issued on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

The warning comes as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) indicates that Mt. Kanlaon could soon be elevated to Alert Level 4, up from the current Level 3. This change would extend the danger zone from six to ten kilometers, perhaps endangering additional communities.

Recent data from the Upper Pantao Observation Station highlights troubling developments, including volcanic inflation and a notable drop in sulfur dioxide emissions. These indicators suggest increasing internal pressure, heightening the risk of a catastrophic event.

Nepomuceno also emphasized the dangers posed by pyroclastic flows, which can reach speeds of 30 to 600 kilometers per hour. “If an eruption occurs, no one within the danger zone can outrun these deadly flows,” he warned. He further noted that rescue operations would be nearly impossible in such a scenario, underscoring the importance of preemptive evacuation measures.

In his statement, Nepomuceno called on residents, including those just outside the immediate danger zone, to “take the situation seriously and evacuate instantly.” He reaffirmed the OCD’s commitment to preventing casualties, stating, “We want no casualties in the event of an eruption.”

As the situation unfolds, authorities continue ⁤to‌ monitor⁤ Mt. Kanlaon closely, prioritizing the safety of⁢ thousands of residents in its shadow.
