Dr. Ryan Fortune’s fascination with science began in the unlikeliest of places—a middle school classroom in Coppell, Texas.The revelation that the intricate tapestry of life could be unraveled to just four chemical bases—adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine—sparked a lifelong passion. “From then on, I wanted to be a scientist,” he recalls. “So I went to Texas A&M as a genetics major.”

But life, as it often does, had other plans. while serving in the Corps of Cadets, Fortune found himself taking a medical school entrance exam—not out of ambition, but to help his team secure a group discount. “I said, ‘why not?’” he laughs. “And that’s how I kind of fell into a career in medicine.”

Today, Dr. Fortune is an assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.His journey to primary care was anything but linear. During medical school, a genetics rotation left him disillusioned. “After doing a genetics panel on a patient, all we could do was tell them what diseases they were prone to and what symptoms to look out for,” he explains. “At the time, there were very few diseases we could actually treat.”

A medical mission trip to Honduras proved to be a turning point. There, Fortune discovered his calling in primary care. “I like being the doctor who looks at a problem, diagnoses it, and also treats it,” he says. “You only really do all that as a primary care physician, in the emergency room, or in ophthalmology. Those were my top three specialty choices in medical school.”

At the Robert B. Green Family Health Clinic, Dr. Fortune serves a diverse patient population from across South Texas. “They come for yearly checkups,medication changes,weight loss treatments—everything,” he notes. “We even have a patient who drives in from devine as he appreciated the care he received at our hospital.”

Beyond the clinic, Fortune dedicates one day a week to serving as the medical director of the women’s clinic at Bexar County Jail. “Every time I see a new patient, by the end of the visit, they’ll have opened up, they’ll be more relaxed, and even a little bit happier,” he shares. “This population often ignores their health or lacks access to care, so we address issues that might have been overlooked for years.”

Mentorship is another cornerstone of his work. The Green clinic trains about a dozen medical residents annually, and Fortune plays a pivotal role in their growth. “Along with the other faculty members, I help ensure they’re meeting their educational goals,” he says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see them grow into confident, capable physicians.”
