“I suffer from pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable lung ⁤disease that restricts breathing. I was denied a double​ lung transplant​ because of⁣ complications with my esophagus, which could cause stomach acid to damage new lungs,” Jyoti shared.Now 34,she continues to fight,proving‌ that ​even the most daunting challenges can be⁤ met‌ with courage.

Jyoti’s battle began long before her ‌cancer diagnosis. At 16, she started experiencing unexplained symptoms that left‌ her body increasingly weak. Doctors initially diagnosed her with athropathy, a painful⁤ joint condition, but ​the pain ‍was sporadic, and life carried ⁤on.

Though, two weeks before her wedding in August 2014, Jyoti ⁤received devastating​ news: lupus had overtaken her body. Doctors warned that without ⁤immediate chemotherapy, her condition would be fatal. She began treatment in October, enduring five grueling months of therapy.

while chemotherapy saved her​ life, it came at ⁤a cost.The treatment weakened her‍ immune system, leading to lung damage and⁢ scarring. In 2015,Jyoti was diagnosed ⁢with mixed connective tissue disease ⁢(MCTD),a condition that further complicated her health. “at⁤ the same time I found out​ about MCTD, I learned ​I also had pulmonary fibrosis. This diagnosis⁤ means ⁣I am now​ on oxygen all⁤ the time,” she explained.

Over the years, Jyoti‌ sought a lung donor but faced repeated rejections. Today, she relies on an oxygen cylinder ⁣to breathe.Despite⁤ these challenges, she remains⁤ hopeful and has found solace in hospice care, a‍ decision that has allowed her to live life ⁣on her own terms.

“The word ‘hospice’ can be scary. It automatically makes you think of ‘the end.’ However,⁢ what many people don’t understand is that hospice care also allows ​those with life-limiting conditions, like‌ me, to live the best life we can,” Jyoti said.

But⁢ I’ve learned that life ⁢is full of closed doors—and sometimes, you have to ​find a window. ⁣I focused on what‌ I‍ could do,like exploring alternative treatments,improving my quality of life,and advocating for others in similar situations. ‌

Jyoti ⁤Smith: ‍I want people to know that it’s okay ⁣to⁣ feel scared, angry, or even hopeless at ​times. Those ‌emotions are valid. But don’t‌ let them consume ‌you. Find your “why”—your reason​ to keep fighting. For⁣ me, it’s my loved ones ​and the hope that my story might help someone else. Also,‍ don’t underestimate the⁢ power of small victories. Jyoti Smith: There’s so much work to be done. First, we need more awareness ⁤and funding for rare diseases. Many of us feel invisible because our conditions aren’t well understood. Second, the​ transplant system needs to be more inclusive. Denying someone a chance at life because of another⁣ illness feels unjust. mental health support is crucial. A terminal‌ diagnosis doesn’t just affect the body—it affects the mind ⁢and soul, ​too. ‍
