Archyde Exclusive Interview: A Conversation with Xander Schauffele on TGL’s Debut and the Future of Indoor Golf
By Archys, Archyde News Editor
Following the highly anticipated debut of TGL (Tech Golf League), the innovative indoor golf league co-founded by Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, Archyde sat down with professional golfer Xander Schauffele of the New York Golf Club.Despite a tough 9-2 loss to The Bay Golf Club in the league’s opening match, Schauffele shared his thoughts on the new format, the challenges of adapting to TGL, and his hopes for the future.
Archyde: Xander, thank you for joining us. The TGL debut was a big moment for golf fans worldwide. How did it feel to be part of such a groundbreaking event?
Xander Schauffele: Thank you for having me. it was definitely a unique experience. TGL is something entirely different from what we’re used to on the PGA Tour. The atmosphere, the technology, the pace—it’s all very new. I think it’s exciting for golf, but it’s also a big adjustment for players like me who are used to traditional outdoor golf.
Archyde: Speaking of adjustments, the match didn’t go as planned for the New York Golf Club. What do you think went wrong?
Xander Schauffele: (laughs) Oh, man. Were do I start? It was one of those days where nothing seemed to click. The Bay Golf Club came out strong, and we just couldn’t find our rhythm. Ludvig, Shane, and Wyndham played incredibly well, and we couldn’t keep up.As I said after the match, we don’t have a coach to blame—it’s all on us. We’ll regroup, learn from this, and come back stronger.
Archyde: You mentioned the lack of a coach. Do you think having a coach or a different team structure could help in TGL?
Xander Schauffele: It’s an captivating question. In traditional golf, we’re used to being independent, making our own decisions on the course. But TGL is more team-oriented, and there’s a lot of strategy involved. Maybe having someone to guide us or analyze our performance could be beneficial. It’s something we’ll definitely consider as the league evolves.
Archyde: The TGL format has been praised for its fast pace and use of technology. What was your favorite part of the experience?
Xander Schauffele: The technology is incredible. The simulator, the graphics, the way the game unfolds—it’s like stepping into the future of golf. I also loved the energy from the crowd. Being mic’d up and interacting with fans in real-time was a new experience for me.It’s a bit nerve-wracking, but it adds a whole new layer of excitement to the game.
Archyde: You mentioned being mic’d up made you anxious. How do you think that aspect of TGL will impact players moving forward?
Xander Schauffele: It’s definitely a challenge. Golf is usually a quiet, introspective sport, and now we’re in this high-energy, interactive surroundings. It’s a big shift, but I think it’s good for the game. It brings fans closer to the action and gives them a glimpse into our thought process. For players, it’s about finding a balance and staying focused despite the added pressure.
Archyde: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the rest of the TGL season?
Xander Schauffele: First and foremost, we need to bounce back from this loss. We have a great team, and I know we’re capable of much more.Personally, I want to get more pleasant with the format and use this as an opportunity to grow as a player. TGL is still in its early stages, and I’m excited to see how it develops.
Archyde: what message do you have for the fans who are excited about TGL?
Xander Schauffele: Thank you for your support! This is a new chapter for golf, and we’re all learning together.Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the sport, TGL offers something for everyone.Stick with us—there’s a lot more excitement to come.
Xander Schauffele and the New York Golf Club will return to action next week as TGL continues to revolutionize the world of golf. Stay tuned to Archyde for more updates and exclusive interviews.
