As the year draws to a close, it’s natural to look back and reflect on the currents shaping the art world. From your viewpoint, how has the art market evolved in recent years, notably in Singapore? [[1](https://artandmarket.net/dialogues/2019/7/29/conversation-with-yeo-tze-yang)]
**Yeo tze Yang:**
The Singapore art scene has definitely seen a lot of change. There’s a growing international recognition of Singaporean artists, which is fantastic. We’re also seeing a boom in art fairs and gallery spaces, which creates more opportunities for artists to showcase their work. But with this growth comes challenges. There’s a constant push and pull between commercial success and staying true to one’s artistic vision. It’s a delicate balance, but one that I beleive Singaporean artists are navigating with increasing sophistication.
**Archyde:**
Your work often delves into themes of identity and positionality. How do these themes intersect with your observations on the evolving art market in singapore?
**Yeo Tze Yang:**
I think my work reflects the complexities of being an artist in Singapore today. There’s a strong sense of national identity and a desire to carve out a space for Singaporean art on the global stage. But at the same time, there are pressures to conform to certain expectations, whether it’s from the market or from society at large. My work explores these tensions, questioning what it means to be a Singaporean artist in a rapidly changing world.
**Archyde:**
It’s fascinating how your work acts as a mirror to the shifting landscape of the art world. Looking ahead to the future, what trends or developments do you foresee shaping the art market, both in Singapore and globally?
**Yeo Tze Yang:**
I think technology will continue to play a major role in the art market. We’re already seeing the rise of digital art and NFT’s, which are changing the way art is created, bought, and sold.
I also believe there will be an increasing emphasis on sustainability and ethical practices within the art world. collectors and institutions are becoming more conscious of the environmental and social impact of their choices. This will lead to a demand for more sustainable and responsible art practices.
**Archyde:** those are certainly compelling insights. Thank you, Yeo Tze Yang, for sharing your perspective with us. We look forward to seeing what you create next.
