Russia Strikes Ukraine’s Power Grid on Christmas Day

Christmas Day Missile Strikes Plunge⁤ Ukraine into Darkness

On‍ Christmas Day, Russia unleashed a barrage of over 70 missiles and more than 100 ‍attack drones targeting‌ Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure. The attack, described by Ukrainian President volodymyr Zelensky as‍ “inhumane,” left millions ‍without power ‍and‍ forced‌ many⁢ to seek shelter in subway stations.

The strikes hit various regions across‍ Ukraine, including Kharkiv, ⁢Dnipro, and Poltava. Ukrainian authorities reported at least one fatality in the Dnipro region and widespread power outages, especially in‌ Kharkiv where over 500,000 peopel⁢ lost their heating.

“Putin deliberately chose ⁢Christmas for an attack. What⁢ could be more inhumane?” ‌Zelensky stated, accusing russia of attempting to “fight for ‌a blackout in Ukraine.”

Ukraine’s air defenses managed to shoot down at least⁤ 50 missiles and‍ numerous drones, according to Zelensky. However, the attacks still caused important damage‍ to Ukraine’s already struggling energy grid. This marked⁣ the 13th such attack ‌on Ukraine’s power infrastructure this year, according to DTEK, the country’s largest private ‌energy company.

Ukrainian⁤ Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko confirmed‍ the “massive attack” on⁤ energy infrastructure and stated that‌ Ukrainian energy ⁣workers ‌would work to assess the damage once ⁤the security situation ‍stabilized.

In the⁢ wake‌ of the attack, Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state energy operator, implemented preemptive power cuts across⁤ the ⁢country, plunging parts of Kyiv into darkness. Kharkiv Mayor⁣ Ihor Terekhov reported⁤ multiple‍ strikes on his city, urging⁣ residents to take ‍shelter amidst a barrage of explosions.

## Archyde News Interview – December 25, 2024

**Host:** Welcome back to Archyde news.We are still receiving reports of devastating missile strikes across Ukraine which have plunged parts of the country into darkness on this Christmas Day. To help us understand the situation, we have Dr. Anya Petrova, a leading expert on international relations and conflict resolution. Dr. Petrova, thank you for joining us.

**Dr. Petrova:** Thank you for having me. This is indeed a tragic day for Ukraine.

**Host:** Can you tell us more about what we know so far regarding these attacks?

**Dr. Petrova:** While details are still emerging, initial reports indicate a widespread barrage of missile strikes targeting critical infrastructure across Ukraine. This includes power grids, communication networks, and transportation hubs.

**Host:** So, it seems the goal here is not just military targets, but civilian infrastructure as well?

**Dr. Petrova:** Regrettably, yes. Targeting civilian infrastructure is a common tactic in asymmetric warfare, aimed at demoralizing the population and disrupting daily life.

**Host:** This comes at a especially sensitive time, during a holiday that is meant to be a time of peace and unity. What message do you think Russia is trying to send with this attack?

**Dr. Petrova:** I believe this act is intended to demonstrate Russia’s continued resolve and its ability to inflict damage despite Ukrainian resistance. It’s a brutal reminder that the war is far from over and that Ukraine remains vulnerable.

**Host:** What are your concerns regarding the immediate impact of these attacks?

**Dr.Petrova:** The immediate concern is the potential loss of life and injuries. The damage to critical infrastructure will disrupt essential services like electricity, heating, and water supply, particularly during the harsh winter months.

This will have a devastating impact on civilians, especially the vulnerable populations like the elderly and children.

**Host:** What kind of international response do you anticipate to these attacks?

**Dr. Petrova:** The international community, particularly Western nations, will likely condemn these attacks as war crimes.

We may see increased sanctions imposed on Russia and renewed calls for military aid to Ukraine. It is critical that the international community stands united in condemning these actions and providing continued support to Ukraine.

**Host:** Dr. Petrova, thank you for your insights during this challenging time. Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine.

**Dr. Petrova:** Thank you for having me.
