Their conversation turned to the rather dilapidated St. Anthony box on the counter. “He’ll find it for you, but when you do find it make sure you throw a few coins into the box.” Anyone who has visited Teague’s and been served by Eileen Teague will recognize this well-known phrase. Eileen, with her warm wit, lamented that the box was in such poor condition that people might be hesitant to donate. “How could you expect anyone to throw a few coins into the box when you couldn’t see St Anthony on it,” she said. Barman Paul Molloy, with a twinkle in his eye, decided to cover the box with an Ardara GAA lotto envelope. However, instead of writing “St. Anthony’s” on it, he cheekily wrote “The Poor Farmers Fund,” much to the amusement of everyone present. Around €100 was collected in the impromptu “Poor Farmers” box that night, and the idea quickly took root. A full-blown Livestock Auction was planned for Christmas that year, with all proceeds going to the Donegal Hospice. Thus, the Poor Farmers Association was born, and the rest, as they say, is history.
