Exciting travel plans in store? If you’re a US citizen dreaming of exploring the UK or Europe in the coming years, it’s important to be aware of some upcoming changes to travel regulations.
Navigating the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Starting sometime in 2024, US citizens (and those from many other visa-waiver countries) will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK. This online submission process replaces the existing landing cards and promises a streamlined experience for travelers.
The ETA application requires basic biographical information, a passport photo, and a face scan for those over 10 years old. There’s a small fee of £10, and most applicants receive a decision within 3 working days. Though, it’s always an excellent idea to apply in advance as processing times can occasionally be longer.
Don’t be fooled by third-party websites offering to process your ETA for an inflated fee.
You can apply directly through the official UK government website.
If your ETA application is rejected, you’ll receive an clarification and have the chance to reapply. Though, a refusal means you won’t be able to apply again and will need to seek a traditional visa.
Entering Europe: The ETIAS System
in 2025, US citizens planning trips to a wider swathe of Europe will encounter a new requirement: the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Similar to the US ESTA, ETIAS aims to enhance security and border control within the Schengen Area, a collection of 30 European countries.
While the specific launch date hasn’t been announced, ETIAS applications will eventually be handled online through the EU’s official portal.
You’ll be asked to provide personal details and travel information, and there’s a €7 fee for adults. Minors won’t be charged.
Your ETIAS authorization will be digitally linked to your passport and will generally be valid for three years or until your passport expires – whichever comes sooner.
Destinations Covered by ETIAS
ETIAS will apply to the following 30 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.”
