The Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) has emerged as a major player in the nickel industry,pouring billions of dollars into its operations since 2015. As of August 2024, the industrial park, located in Central Sulawesi, has invested a staggering US.3 billion, equivalent to IDR 552.2 trillion (based on an exchange rate of IDR 16,100 per US dollar).This investment reflects the park’s commitment to developing Indonesia’s nickel resources and contributing to the country’s economic growth. “This is the data, the accumulated investment from 2015 to 2024 is worth US$ 34.3 billion. Between 2022 and 2023, the investment is expected to grow by US$ 0.54 billion, reaching approximately IDR 8.69 trillion. This upward trend is set to continue, with an additional US$ 4.16 billion, or IDR 6.69 trillion, added to the investment from 2023 to 2024. Beyond investment, IMIP has also made significant contributions to the Indonesian government through tax payments. In 2023 alone, the company paid US$ 1.16 billion in taxes, translating to approximately IDR 18.56 trillion (using an exchange rate of IDR 16,000 per US dollar). “The (tax) that we have paid to the state in 2023 is US$ 1.16 billion, so around IDR 16 T or maybe up to IDR 17 T, right? Can it be 17 T? Maybe, multiplied by IDR 16,000 now is the exchange rate,” Bassar clarified. IMIP has consistently been a significant taxpayer, with US$ 1.32 billion (IDR 21.12 trillion) paid in taxes in 2022 and US$ 655 million (IDR 10.48 trillion) in 2021. The park’s success is also reflected in its export earnings. As of November 2024, IMIP has generated US$ 14.45 billion in foreign exchange from exports, equivalent to IDR 232.6 trillion (based on an exchange rate of IDR 16,100 per US dollar). This highlights the park’s role in boosting Indonesia’s export performance. Bassar noted, “Then for export foreign exchange, until November 2024 the value has reached US$ 14.45 billion.”The IMIP Industrial Area has emerged as a significant economic driver, bringing prosperity to the community of Bahodopi.
