A lawyer representing rapper Jay-Z has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit accusing him and fellow musician Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping a young woman in 2000. The lawsuit was brought forth by an Alabama woman, referred to as Jane Doe, who claims the R&B and hip-hop icons drugged and assaulted her at a house party following the MTV Video Music Awards that year.
Doe’s allegations have come under scrutiny due to inconsistencies in her account. She initially stated she interacted with a specific celebrity at the party, but his representative confirmed he was touring at the time. Additionally, Doe’s father told NBC News he doesn’t remember driving five hours to pick her up after the alleged assault as she described.
In an interview with NBC,Doe admitted to making “some mistakes” in her initial allegations but maintained the core of her claim.
Advocates for sexual assault survivors emphasize that it’s not unusual for victims to have fragmented memories of the event, especially if drugs were involved.
Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, currently detained awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges, faces a new sexual assault lawsuit filed by a woman identified as “Jane Doe.” This allegation is one of many against Combs, who has vehemently denied all accusations.
The lawsuit alleges that the assault occurred at a party in 2007, where Jane Doe claims she was drugged and subsequently raped by both Combs and rapper Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) while a female celebrity, referred to as “Celebrity B,” watched.
Jane Doe’s legal team, lead by attorney Tony Buzbee, insists that the claims are credible and are currently being thoroughly vetted. Though, both Combs and Jay-Z have vehemently denied the allegations.
jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, called the lawsuit “stunning” and accused Buzbee of “peddling this false story in the press,” while Jay-Z himself issued a statement calling the lawsuit a ploy for “money and fame.” He added, ”This incident didn’t happen… This 1-800 lawyer doesn’t realize it yet, but, soon [true justice will prevail].”
A spokesperson for Combs echoed Jay-Z’s sentiments, labelling the lawsuit a “shameful money grab” and predicting it’s imminent demise.
Adding another layer of complexity, photographs from the alleged night of the assault show both Jay-Z and Combs at a different location than the one described by Jane Doe. The whereabouts of the two musicians for the entire evening remain unclear.
