Against All Odds: A Young Girl’s Remarkable Survival at Sea
An 11-year-old girl’s incredible survival story has emerged from the Mediterranean Sea, offering a poignant reminder of the perilous journeys undertaken by desperate people seeking refuge in Europe.
Clinging to Hope
After being adrift for three days, the young girl, identified as Yasmine, was found clinging to tire tubes. She had been on a boat carrying around 45 people, including her young brother. Tragically, all other passengers are presumed to have perished after the vessel overturned in a violent storm.

It was during a nighttime search operation that the crew of the rescue vessel, Trotamar II, heard faint cries pierc through the storm’s roar. After three days of relentless searching, hope was quickly fading – until they spotted the lone survivor drifting off the coast of Italy JPG.
“It was an incredible coincidence that we heard the child’s voice even though the engine was running,” said Matthias Wiedenlübbert, the skipper of Trotamar II. “And of course, we looked for other survivors. But after the day-long storm with over 23 knots and 2.5-meter-high waves, it was hopeless.”

A Plea for Safe Passage
News of Yasmine’s rescue has reignited debates surrounding migrant crossings and the dire need for safe and humane passage options. “Even during storms, people are forced to use risky escape routes across the Mediterranean. We need safe passage for refugees and an open Europe that welcomes people and gives them easy access to the asylum system. Drowning in the Mediterranean is not an option,” argued Katja Tempel, a crew member who assisted in the rescue.
