Papua New Guinea Youth Take Center Stage at Green Diplomacy Week
Empowering the Next Generation to Tackle Climate Challenges
From December 11-13, the Moresby Arts Theatre came alive with the energy and ideas of Papua New Guinea’s youth during the EU Green Diplomacy Week. This year’s event, dedicated to fostering youth leadership on environmental issues, drew together a vibrant mix of young people, experts, and leaders to tackle pressing global challenges.
“The EU is committed to working with partners around the globe to address challenges and the necessary green transition,” said H.E. Jacques Fradin, the EU Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, in his opening address. “In Papua New Guinea, the EU has been a long-standing partner on climate and environmental action through initiatives like the EU-FCCB and EU-STREIT programmes. We are delighted to dedicate this year’s Green Diplomacy Week to youth leadership.”
Honourable Powes Parkop, NCD Governor and Guest Speaker, set the tone for the inspiring discussions to follow.
The event, organized by the EU-funded Forestry-Climate Change-Biodiversity (EU-FCCB) Programme in collaboration with the EU Delegation, kicked off with a screening of the captivating documentary “Into the Jungle”. The film transported the audience into the heart of Papua New Guinea’s diverse ecosystems, highlighting both their beauty and the urgent need for conservation.
Following the screening, a panel of conservationists engaged in a thoughtful discussion, delving into the complex challenges and unique opportunities involved in safeguarding the nation’s biodiversity. The discussion underscored the vital role local communities play in conservation efforts, reminding everyone that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility.
Throughout the week, a series of carefully selected films continued to raise awareness and encourage participation in the crucial dialogue surrounding climate change. A highlight was the “Youth Leadership in Climate Action and Sustainability” panel discussion. Young environmental leaders, joined by Ambassador Fradin, shared their insights on empowering the next generation to lead biodiversity and climate advocacy efforts.
The panel discussion also showcased direct opportunities for young people to get involved, including scholarships launched by the EU-FCCB Programme at the event. These initiatives demonstrate the EU’s commitment to investing in the future by nurturing a new generation of environmental champions in Papua New Guinea.
