Israel Launches Airstrikes on Syria After Crossing Border
Israel launched hundreds of airstrikes on military and naval installations in Syria, focusing on chemical weapons stockpiles and missile sites, after Israeli troops crossed into a demilitarized zone near the Golan Heights. The incursion and strikes came as Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow amid the fall of Damascus to rebel groups.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the incursion was a response to the unfolding chaos in Syria.
“We will not allow any hostile force to establishment itself on our border," Netanyahu declared.
The strikes were met with condemnation from Russia and Saudi Arabia. U.S. Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller defended the Israeli actions. He stated that the Syrian Army had abandoned its positions in the disputed territory, saying “The Syrian army abandoned its positions in the area … which potentially creates a vacuum that could have been filled by terrorist organizations.”
Israel boasted of carrying out the airstrikes on `hundreds of points’
The ongoing conflict in Syria and the subsequent incursion into a demilitarized buffer zone raised concerns about the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria. The agreement has been a point of controversy, with some arguing that Israel’s“We strongly condemn any violation of a sovereign nation’s territory. This action undermines regional stability,” a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson stated.
