Google Urges FTC to Strip Microsoft of Exclusive AI Partnership with OpenAI
In a bold strategic move, Google has appealed to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to dismantle Microsoft’s exclusive cloud partnership with OpenAI, the creators of the popular ChatGPT. The move signals growing tensions in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence as tech giants vie for dominance.
“Microsoft’s deal with OpenAI presents a significant risk to competition in the AI landscape,”
Google stressed in its request to the FTC.
“This exclusive arrangement allows Microsoft to leverage OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology to enhance its own services, potentially crowding out other developers and stifling innovation.”
Urging a Level Playing Field
Google argues that Microsoft acquiring exclusive access to OpenAI’s groundbreaking AI technology creates an unfair advantage. This could disadvantage smaller competitors who lack the resources to develop independent AI solutions or collaborate with OpenAI independently.
This, they say, undermines a “level playing field,” hindering the growth and development of other AI innovations. The filing requests the FTC to intervene and force Microsoft to relinquish its exclusive hold on OpenAI’s tech, effectively opening access to other cloud providers and developers.
