Qubit Revolution: Grenoble startup partners with STMicroelectronics to Scale Quantum Computing

Leading French quantum computing company Quobly has announced a major partnership with semiconductor giant STMicroelectronics. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development and scaling of quantum computing, bringing us closer to a future where powerful quantum processors are readily accessible.

The collaboration leverages STMicroelectronics’ 28nm fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) technology, known for its ability to deliver both cost-effectiveness and high production scalability. Adapting this technology platform to support quantum computing represents a significant step toward realizing commercially viable, large-scale quantum computing solutions.

Combining STMicroelectronics’ expertise in semiconductor manufacturing and Quobly’s deep understanding of quantum computing, the partnership targets the development of an initial 100-qubit quantum processor prototype. This machine is expected to lay the foundation for scaling technology to 100,000+ qubit systems, ultimately striving for a fault-tolerant, 1 million qubit processor by 2031. Such powerful quantum computers hold tremendous promise for revolutionizing industries like pharmaceuticals, materials science, and climate modeling.

This ambitious roadmap aligns with Quobly’s mission to both reduce key technical hurdles and manfacturing challenges in the field of quantum computing. Commenting on the partnership, they stated: "We firmly believe this collaboration will accelerate the translation of quantum computing from the lab to the real-world."

Crucially, this collaboration extends beyond merely academic research. This project also involves CEA-Leti, a renowned innovation center in Grenoble, known for its expertise in cryogenic electronics. Including cryogenic expertise ensures the development of a high-performance computing platform suitable for spin qubits.
