‘Golden Bachelor’ Gerry Turner’s Cancer Diagnosis: What to Know
Newly Single After Cancer Diagnosis
Following the shocking split announcement from “Golden Bachelor” stars Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist after just three months of marriage, Turner opened up about the reason behind their sudden separation: a battle with cancer.
The 72-year-old shared his diagnosis weeks before their split, revealing he had been diagnosed with Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a type of bone marrow cancer. Although there is no cure for his illness, Turner said, "It was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me. And I was a bit in denial for while; I didn’t want to admit to it."
While he knew this diagnosis was life-changing, he said, “I wanted my life to continue on as normal as possible, and that led me to believing that as normal as possible more meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two in-laws, my granddaughters. And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority.”
Impact on Relationship and Next Steps
Turner acknowledged that the cancer diagnosis weighed heavily on their relationship, but he remained hopeful and positive: “When you are hit with that kind of news and the shock wears off after a few days or a few weeks and you regroup and you realize what’s important to you, that’s where you start to move forward.”
Turner emphasized that he hoped fans would view their split "a little bit differently," recognizing that the diagnosis deeply affected their decision-making process.
Nist echoed that while hurt, she too remained positive: "He told me though that it was the type of cancer that he would most likely outlive. We just felt like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart," she shared with “Good Morning America”
Nist empathized, noting "I was extremely upset," disclosing to "GMA" that she believes in his strength to face the challenge with optimism.
