‘Mod Squad’ Star Michael Cole Dies at 84
Actor Michael Cole, best known for his role in the 1968 counterculture television series “The Mod Squad”,
has died at the age of 84.
Cole passed away at his home in Santa Clarita, California, on May 3, his longtime agent Michael.
Nesbitt said in a statement.
## From Model to Counterculture Icon
Michael Cole began his career as a model
before transitioning to acting in the late 1960s. He landed his breakout role as
Peter ” Pete ” Cochran, a youthful undercover cop in the groundbreaking series “The
Mod Squad.”
Along with his co-stars Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III, Cole helped usher in a
new era of television, portraying a diverse trio of young officers tackling
contemporary issues with grit and style. The show dealt with topics like drug abuse,
racial tensions, and the Vietnam War, themes rarely explored in prime-time television at the
time.
“The Mod Squad” achieved immense popularity and ran for five seasons, solidifying Cole’s status
as a rising star.
## A Versatile Career
Following “The Mod Squad,” Cole
continued to work steadily in television. He appeared in popular shows
including
“MacGyver,” “The Waltons,” and “Murder, She Wrote,” showcasing his versatility and
commanding presence.
In addition to acting, Cole showed his ability in
front of the camera as a host for the game show “The New Dating Game,” demonstrating his charisma and
wit. He captivated audiences from
1974 through 1979 before moving on to join the
cast of “General Hospital,” another
long-running television staple.
Cole’s portrayal of
the complex character Jack “Chainsaw” Starr
on “General Hospital”
allowed him to showcase his dramatic range.
