Hahn Celebrates Legacy of Longtime Executive Director of LA Harbor Boys & Girls Clubs

A Legacy of Service: MIKE LANSING Retires After 30 Years Leading the Boys & Girls Clubs of LA Harbor

A beloved figure in San Pedro, Mike Lansing has retired after 30 years leading the clubs, leaving behind a profound impact on generations of kids.

It’s a moment many in San Pedro never thought would come. May 10, a beloved figure is stepping down after three decades leading the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor.

Mike Lansing, whose dedication helped transform the lives of thousands of children, making it hard to imagine the organization without him.

“There are many who can’t believe that this day has come,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. “We have always seen Mike as the leader, the face, and the champion of our Boys & Girls Clubs. He’s not only transformed the lives of generations of kids in our community but has also inspired others to follow in his footsteps. I am grateful for his decades of hard work and wish him well in his much-deserved retirement.”

Mike Lansing is a second-generation San Pedro resident who grew up playing sportes at what was then known as the San Pedro Boys Club. When Lansing stepped into the role of Executive Director in 1995,aged

"One of the reasons we have been able to do more is the tremendous support that Supervisor Hahn has provided year in and year out,” Lansing explained during a recent ceremony. He continued,

“We all, in the communities, need grassroots, need to provide those services. I ask all the supervisors to continue their great support of all of our citizens because they deserve it."

Expanding Opportunities, One Child at a Time

Under Mooney’s leadership, the organization went beyond serving just one club in San Pedro. It expanded to 25 club houses and school sites across San Pedro, Wilmington Oand Harbor City, serving 2,800 kids daily.

Gone are the days when college was viewed as the solely path to a successful future.

Lansing recognized that college might not be the best fit for every child and spearheaded the creation of the Career Bound program. This innovative initiative provides workforce skills and paid internships, preparing students for success in fulfilling, well-paid union jobs in construction trades like welding and plumbing.

Career Bound partners with Harbor Freight Tools for Schools to offer hands-on training and certification. The program collaborates with local unions like the ILWU and IBEW, ensuring graduates secure jobs supporting themselves and their families.
