Elon Basketball Teams Ready for Hardcourt Action

This weekend is a big one for Elon University basketball fans. Both the men’s and women’s teams are set to hit the court after strong performances last week.

Men’s Basketball Seeks to Extend Home Winning Streak

After a resounding victory over Wofford last Saturday, the Elon University men’s basketball team now returns to Schar Center facing their next challenge. Their opponent this time around is Virginia University of Lynchburg this Saturday, December 14 at 7 p.m. The Phoenix are looking to maintain their undefeated record on their home court.

Senior forward Sam Sherry put on a show last week against Wofford, leading the Phoenix to a 79-56 trouncing with 22 points, the highest of his season. Sherry’s impressive night went beyond the points, as he added a career-high three three-pointers, one block, and one steal. Graduate student center Matthew Van Komen was dominant on defense, setting a season-high with six blocks, and leading the team with 12 rebounds.

The Phoenix are hoping to tap into the momentum from their recent success as they face Virginia University of Lynchburg, and aim to continue their winning streak at home.

Women’s Basketball Heads West for a California Challenge

Meanwhile, the Elon University women’s basketball team heads west for an exciting road trip to California. Their first game will be on Sunday, December 15 at 3 p.m. against the formidable University of Southern California.

Last week saw some standout performances against Furman. Among them was junior forward Hannah Dereje, who poured in a career-high 12 points with perfect accuracy from the free throw line, going 8 for 8. Senior forward Iycez Adams had a strong return to her former team, East Carolina, leading the Phoenix with a season-high 10 points.

The women’s team will be looking to build on these performances and snag a victory away from home against tough competition.
