Apple’s iPhone 17 Air Could Be Its Thinnest iPhone Ever
The next generation of iPhones promises some significant changes, including a slimmed down "Air" model.
Rumored to arrive alongside the iPhone SE4 in Spring 2024, the iPhone ‘Air’ is anticipated to feature Apple’s in-house modem, a key factor impacting its remarkably thin design.
A Focus on Thinness
The iPhone 17 Air, or whatever it’s ultimately called, could be a game-changer, with reports suggesting it will be approximately 25% thinner than current iPhone models.
Sources inside Apple suggest the phone is likely to be around 2 millimeters thinner than the more expensive iPhone 16 Pro, potentially making the iPhone 17 Air "Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This could deprive it of the title of thinnest iPhone.
Design Over Spec?
Maintaining functionality within such a slim design has required innovation. One significant change comes with the introduction of Apple’s in-house modem, a key enabler of the Air’s unusual slimness.
The new modem, codenamed “Sinope,” will reportedly be more tightly integrated with other components, potentially saving space and battery power. This technology likely to appear in lower-end iPads by 2025 subjugating that even thinner models.
While less powerful than Qualcomm’s flagship modems, advantages include griping real-world performance with differences, which has led to justifiable exploration of its implementation.
What features might be sacrificed in the iPhone 17 Air to achieve its thinner design?
