METRONET Ellenbrook Line Opens: Perth’s North East Connected

Perth’s North East Celebrates Arrival of the METRONET Ellenbrook Line

Perth’s north-eastern suburbs are finally connected to world-class public transport with the grand opening of the METRONET Ellenbrook Line. This marks the biggest expansion of Perth’s rail network in over 16 years, providing a significant boost to the region.

Connecting a Growing Community to Affordability and Opportunity

Delivered by the WA Labor Government funded in partnership with the Federal Albanese Labor Government, this new 21-kilometer line will connect tens of thousands of people to the city for the first time. Five new stations have been added, located at Morley, Noranda, Ballajura, Whiteman Park and Ellenbrook, seamlessly connecting with the newly opened Bayswater Station.

In a direct win for commuters, the journey to the city from Ellenbrook will now take just 30 minutes – less than half the time it previously took using public transport.

The project’s visionary design prioritizes accessibility and affordability. Each modern station offers ample parking with 3,300 parking bays and 335 bicycle storage racks. Train frequency is set at 12 minute intervals during peak times and every 15 minutes outside those periods, ensuring convenient and reliable service.

Further promoting accessibility, travel to and from Ellenbrook will be free on Sundays for everyone, and free for students travelling to and from school. Generally, weekend travel costs as little as $4.68 on the Cook Labor Government’s two-zone fare cap, delivering affordable transport while stimulating local employment, education and tourism opportunities.

A Transit Commitment Backed by Years of Planning and Expert Teamwork

The $1.65 billion project was a significant undertaking, creating approximately 6,500 jobs throughout its construction. These opportunities included 332 apprenticeships, 140 graduate positions, and engagement of 290 Aboriginal employees, demonstrating the project’s commitment to the community and its future workforce.

Honoring a promise made to the community, the project’s origin was first promised back in 2008, though not delivered at that time. The WA Labor government made delivering this line a priority, immediately starting the planning process after election in 2017.

Construction of the Ellenbrook Line involved some major feats of engineering, including the demolition and reconstruction of the Broun Avenue bridge, the removal of the iconic Bayswater Bridge, and a momentous tunneling project below Tonkin Highway. Passengers will also enjoy a new 900-meter-long viaduct through Bayswater.

More Than Just a Commute; Transforming Communities

The METRONET Ellenbrook Line is not just a commute; it’s a catalyst for ongoing economic development in the region. It unlocks economic opportunities through vibrate new community spaces, commercial and residential development. Importantly, the line will be supported by 100 new buses adding an additional five million bus service kilometers every year, further strengthening the transportation network in the area.

“This line is about transforming communities, providing access to affordable travel, job creation and exciting opportunities. “WA Premier Roger Cook stated. “It’s been a long time coming, and I’m proud to see it finally come to fruition.”
