Indonesia’s New Capital: Offices and Residences Ready by December 2024

Indonesia’s New Capital City on Track for 2024 Completion, Offices

Heads of the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) announced that all offices and residences within IKN, located in East Kalimantan, are on track to be ready by December 2024. Basuki Hadimuljono unveiled the progress during the 23rd Congress of the Indonesian Engineers Association in Yogyakarta on December 5, 2024.

“The offices must be ready by this December, and God willing, everything will be ready,” Basuki declared.

He detailed that the coordinating ministry office, comprising 16 towers, and the 47 residential towers are already in place. Additionally, supporting facilities such as restaurants, cafes, laundries, and barbershops are fully prepared.

“We have prepared everything there,” he said.

Looking Ahead: Beyond Physical Infrastructure

Basuki cautioned that while significant physical progress has been made, non-physical developments still require attention. He emphasized the crucial role of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) in shaping the future of IKN.

“The development of IKN is not only about physical development, but also non- physical aspects,” he stated.

He cited the Sepaku area as an example, explaining that organizing it effectively required a strong socio-engineering approach, not just engineering alone.

“We have to consider the community,” he stressed.

Basuki also acknowledged the presence of clay shale soil in certain IKN regions, which necessitates special treatment to ensure stronger land stability.

President Prabowo Eyes 2028 Move

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo revealed that President Prabowo Subianto aims to have his office operational at IKN by August 17, 2028. Dody shared this during a Ministry of Public Works event on December 6, 2024.

“At the latest, by August 17, 2029, the executive, legislative, and judiciary, along with all civil servants, will (move) there,” Dody said.

However, Dody acknowledged potential construction delays due to the government’s focus on other pressing programs, mainly the food self-sufficiency program. The Ministry of Public Works is currently prioritizing water provision for agriculture.

Despite these challenges, Dody remains optimistic that IKN’s development will stay on course. The project timeline, established during President Joko Widodo’s tenure, has outlined a five-stage construction process set to complete in 2045. The total estimated cost for this ambitious project is IDR 466 trillion
