Port Canaveral welcomes first Celebrity Cruise ship
The Celebrity Cruise ship Equinox docked at the port, marking the first time Celebrity has based a ship at Port Canaveral.
Port Canaveral welcomed its newest resident on Saturday morning: the Celebrity Cruises’ ship Equinox. This marks a significant milestone for both the cruise line and the bustling Florida port, as it’s Celebrity’s first-ever homeport in Port Canaveral.
“It’s the first time we’ve had Celebrity call Port Canaveral home. It’s been a long time in the making so we’re really pleased to have the ship here,” said Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray.
To celebrate this new partnership, dancers and a band put on a lively performance in the Equinox’s main theater, followed by the exchange of commemorative plaques between Capt. Murray and the Equinox captain, Nikolaos Frantzis.
Captain Frantzis expressed his enthusiasm to be in Orlando, Florida, stating, “Orlando, Florida, it’s a pleasure to be here and we’re looking forward to continue calling to this beautiful port and to have excellent relations with all of you.”
Securing Celebrity Cruises as a homeport partner was a strategic win for Port Canaveral. Capt. Murray shared that they had been actively courting Celebrity for some time, highlighting the attractiveness of Port Canaveral’s drive-in market compared to south Florida, which has traditionally been Celebrity’s stronghold.
The Equinox is now the 15th vessel to call the world’s second-busiest cruise port home. Boasting a capacity of nearly 3,000 passengers, the ship will embark on seven-day cruises journeying throughout the Caribbean.Deparitions from Port Canaveral’s Cruise Terminal 1 will take travelers to picturesque destinations including the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Mexico, San Juan, and St. Maarten.
Looking ahead, Capt. Murray confidently stated that discussions between Port Canaveral and Celebrity Cruises are ongoing, hinting at possibilities for further collaborations and expansions.
Travel agent Ed Tenuto, with Castaway Dream Travel, warmly welcomed the arrival of Celebrity to the port. “It gives us a lot of options,” he said. “Our client base is very interested in Celebrity, so we’re very excited about that.”
