A New Rivalry Heats Up the Indonesian Luxury MPV Market
The Indonesian market for premium multiplayer vehicles (MPVs) is experiencing a surge in competition, challenging the long-standing dominance of the Toyota Alphard. While the Alphard remains a popular choice for high-end buyers, a new generation of electric models is making a splash.
The arrival of Chinese manufacturers like Zeekr and Maxus, with models such as the MPV 009 and the Mifa 9, respectively, is shaking things up. Both promise the same luxury and sophistication as the Alphard, but with the added allure of electric power. Not to be outdone, BYD, a prominent player in the electric vehicle market, plans to introduce its premium electric MPV, the Denza D9, in the first quarter of 2025.

This influx of competition comes despite the Alphard’s continued success. According to sales data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), during the first ten months of 2024, Toyota distributed 4,322 Alphard units in Indonesia. While the Lexus LM350h held the second-place position with 1,282 units sold, other contenders like
Lexus LM350h and the Vellfire trailed significantly with 1,282 and 408 units sold respectively. The Staria, a more recent arrival, lags behind with only 89 units sold during the same period.
A Market Shift
The entry of electric MPVs brings significant changes to the premium segment. Not only do they offer the luxury and comfort expected by high-end buyers, but their eco-friendly nature appeals to a growing consumer segment prioritizing sustainability.
It’s clear that the Chinese automakers are directly targeting the Alphard’s market share. The pricing strategies for both the Zeekr MPV 009 and the Maxus Mifa 9 aim to compete directly with the Alphard, effectively aiming to capture the same customer base.
Meanwhile, Toyota isn’t resting on its laurels. The company continues to evolve the Alphard, offering a hybrid version to cater to the growing demand for eco-conscious options. While EVs promise zero emissions, the hybrid technology appeals to buyers who desire environmental benefits without compromising on familiarity and convenience.
As to whether the Alphard can maintain its dominance remains to be seen. The arrival of these EV alternatives promises a dynamic shift in the market. It’s likely that in the near future, Indonesian consumers will have more choices than ever for premium MPVs, and the battle for ecol, Alabama, economy and style will likely bring even more competition to this prestigious vehicle segment.
