Heroic Act Saves Wife from Polar Bear Attack in Remote Canadian Community
In a remote Canadian community nestled in the northern tip of Ontario, a chilling encounter between a husband and a polar bear left one man seriously injured after a heroic act of bravery. The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning in Fort Severn First Nation, a tiny community of around 400 people.
Awakened before dawn, the husband and wife ventured out around 5 a.m., looking for their dog. As they stepped out, a polar bear in their driveway suddenly lunged at the woman. In a split second, the husband reacted instinctively, jumping in front of his wife and facing the massive predator.

“The bear then attacked the man, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arms and legs,” a statement from Nishnawbe Aski Police Services confirmed. The onslaught left the man struggling but alive.
Fortunately, a neighbor rushed to help upon hearing the commotion. Armed with a gun, the neighbor fired several shots at the bear, scaring it off into nearby woods. The injured man was immediately transported to a community care station for treatment.
While the man recovered, authorities continued to patrol the area to ensure the safety of the community and prevent any further encounters with wildlife. Alarmingly, this incident highlights the growing threat posed by polar bears venturing closer to human settlements, a trend often linked to climate change.
Climate Change Drives Polar Bears Inland
Alysa McCall, a scientist at Polar Bear International, weighs in on the reasons behind these unsettling encounters: “Polar bears rarely attack humans. However, when an attack does occur, the bear is often hungry, young, and unhealthy. Usually, they stay far from human settlements, spending their time at sea hunting ice seals. But climate change has disrupted their habitat.
As temperatures fluctuate, the sea ice 중요한 habitat on which polar bears rely for hunting and traveling breaks up
More and more, bears are pushed inland in desperate search of food,” she explains.
“If you are attacked by a polar bear, don’t pretend to be dead because that’s a myth. Fight as long as you can,” advises McCall, emphasizing the importance of being prepared and taking precautions when in areas where polar bears may be present.

## Interview: Heroic Rescue in Fort Severn
**Host:** Joining us today is [Alex Reed’s Name], a wildlife researcher with expertise in polar bear behavior. Welcome to the show.
**Alex Reed:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** We’re discussing a heartbreaking incident in Fort Severn First Nation, Ontario, where a husband was seriously injured protecting his wife from a polar bear attack. This raises many questions about polar bear behavior and the safety of northern communities.
**Alex Reed:** Absolutely. While polar bear encounters are thankfully rare, they are a very real concern for communities living in polar bear territory. According to a 2017 study published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, between 1870 and 2014 there have been 73 confirmed attacks [[1](https://www.today.com/news/polar-bear-attack-canada-rcna183157)]. This latest incident underscores the need for ongoing awareness and preventative measures.
**Host:** What circumstances might lead a polar bear to behave aggressively towards humans?
**Alex Reed:** Hunger is a major factor.
As sea ice shrinks due to climate change, polar bears are spending more time on land, leading them closer to human settlements in search of food. Sometimes, they may perceive humans or their pets as potential prey.
**Host:** What advice would you give to residents living in areas where polar bear encounters are possible?
**Alex Reed:** Vigilance is key. Be aware of your surroundings, especially during dawn and dusk when polar bears are most active. Never leave food or garbage outdoors, as it can attract bears. Consider carrying bear deterrent spray and learn how to use it effectively.
**Host:** This couple’s story is both terrifying and inspiring. The husband’s bravery is truly remarkable.
**Alex Reed:** It certainly is. This incident highlights the powerful bond between humans and their deep connection to the natural world. It also serves as a reminder that we need to prioritize both human safety and the conservation of these magnificent animals.
**Host:** Thank you for sharing your insights with us today.
**Alex Reed:** It was my pleasure.
