Next Generation Rises: SA Rugby invests in South Africa‘s Young Rugby Stars
After a five-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the U17 Elite Player Development (EPD) Camp made a triumphant return, bringing together South Africa’s top young rugby talents for an intensive training program near Wellington. This camp served not just as a platform for individual development but also as a crucial step in shaping the future of South African rugby.
Held at Boland Landbou, the camp saw a group of promising young athletes hone their skills under the watchful eyes of current and past SA Schools coaches. This collaborative environment created a high-performance atmosphere where both players and coaches benefitted from shared expertise and passion, ensuring that the foundations for success at higher levels were firmly established.
Building a Legacy of Excellence
Ian Schwartz, SA Rugby’s General Manager for Participation and Development, highlighted the camp’s pivotal role in nurturing a pipeline of talent for the national team. “The U17 EPD camp is not just about showcasing talent. It’s about refining the fundamentals that underpin success at higher levels,” said Schwartz.
“This initiative aligns with our commitment to long-term player development and it’s exciting to see this group of players laying a solid foundation for the future of South African rugby.”);
He emphasized the proven success of the EPD system, highlighting the dominance of the Springboks, a team renowned for its reliance on locally developed talent.
More Than Just Talent: Hard Work and Dedication Define Success
Herman Masimla, Senior Manager of Development at SA Rugby, expressed his deep appreciation for all those involved in the camp’s success. “This camp exemplifies the importance of hard work and perseverance,” said Masimla. “While the talent on display has been exceptional, achieving success at the highest level requires consistent effort, discipline, and resilience.
“I also want to commend the school coaches and officials who made sacrifices to ensure this camp delivered world-class training. Their contributions are integral to the ongoing success of our program.”
A Journey, Not a Destination: Encouragement for Future Stars
Understanding that selection for this camp might be just one chapter in many players’ journeys, Masimla offered words of encouragement to those who weren’t chosen. “Not being included in this camp does not mean your journey has ended. Everyone starts at zero, and all players will have a fair opportunity to be considered for their respective U18 Craven Week teams and, eventually, the SA Schools squads.”
This camp reflects SA Rugby’s unwavering commitment to nurturing talent and maintaining excellence at all levels of the game. The U17 EPD program is not only equipping players with essential skills but also supporting the broader development of South African rugby. “With this foundation, the future looks bright for the next generation of players and coaches,” added Masimla.
