Norwegian Minister Blasts Lavrov’s ‘Parallel Universe’ Speech at OSCE

Norwegian Minister Slams Lavrov‘s Speech, Talking of “Parallel Universe”

During a plenary session at the OSCE Ministerial Council in Malta, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Bart Eide delivered a scathing criticism of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s speech, calling it reminiscent of a “parallel universe.”

Eide emphasized that Russia’s actions, particularly its invasion of Ukraine, are a clear violation of fundamental principles enshrined in the Helsinki Final Act and the UN Charter. He stressed that the cornerstone of international relations is respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles Russia is blatantly ignoring.

“We know perfectly well what is happening,” Eide declared. “Ukraine must win and will win this war. Many countries stand with Ukraine in its fight not only for its own independence but for the principles we all share.”

The Norwegian minister underscored the global condemnation of Russia’s actions, stating that the international community recognizes the reality of the situation. He called on everyone to see through an alternative narrative that diverges from the truth.

Eide further pointed out that after Ukraine’s inevitable victory, there will be a need for reflection and discussion on shaping the post-war era.

Lavrov’s participation in the OSCE meeting has drawn criticism. Several countries lodged formal protests (“demarches”) against him during his speech. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna expressed regret over Malta’s decision to allow Lavrov to attend, emphasizing the inappropriateness of his presence.

Although Lavrov is subject to EU sanctions that freeze his assets and prohibit the provision of economic resources to him, he remains unaffected by travel restrictions.

What strategic objectives might Russia seek to ‍achieve through Lavrov’s‍ attendance at the‌ OSCE, considering the current geopolitical context?
