Collaboration on Neurological Rehabilitation: Rome and Shanghai Join Forces

A Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed between Rome’s Irccs San Raffaele and the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, merging the strengths of two powerhouse institutions. The new alliance, signed by Massimo Fini, scientific director of Irccs San Raffaele, and Jian-Guang Xu, director of the Faculty of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shanghai University, focuses on jointly advancing research and treatment in the fields of motor and cognitive rehabilitation.

This significant collaboration builds upon a previous visit by a delegation from Shanghai to Rome, where they toured Irccs San Raffaele facilities. “This is the most influential group in the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine in the People’s Republic of China,” highlighted Fini, referencing their expansive care network which spans numerous cities in southeast China. Serving a population of several hundred million across diverse locations.

“The agreement serves as coming full circle,” stated Fini “as well, as in October, one of our research teams was invited to share their expertise with the university’s faculty and staff, presenting lectures and workshops on cutting edge neuro rehabiliation techniques for stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s dementia.”

A Framework for Collaborative Research

The signed protocol outlines a detailed framework for ongoing exchange.

“Our work will specifically focus on gaining a deeper understanding of non-invasive brain stimulation methods,” explained Dr. Paolo Maria Rossini, head of the Neuroscience and Neurorehabilitation Department at Irccs San Raffaele. “This includes exploring the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation and similar techniques, as well as refining non-invasive brain stimulation treatments.

We aim to one day develop personalized treatments for brain injuries.” Rossin continued explained the collaboration listed, “partnering on skills brining expertise in specific treatment methods used to diagnose and treat neurological conditions, in addition to advancing technology to better understand and address advances research challenges in brain function and recovery.”

Addressing a Global Health Issue

This partnership extends beyond shared interest in neurological rehabilitation.xxxxx Both institutions recognize the urgent need for innovative solutions catering to the rising prevalence of stroke globally, a significant issue impacting both nations.
“It is crucial to find innovative approaches,” noted Dr. Xu – a key figure in the field

China. “Stroke has emerged as one of the leading causes of mortality and disability since 2015″ Dr xu “Combined with the ever- increasing population of elderly individuals there,
