French Women’s Handball Team Grinds Out Victory Against Romania, Eyes Montenegrin Showdown
The French women’s handball team earned a hard-fought victory against Romania, securing two crucial points in their Euro campaign. Despite acknowledging it wasn’t their best performance, the team demonstrated resilience and determination, digging deep to claim victory in the face of tough Romanian opposition.
“It’s not our best performance,” said right back Laura Flippes. “But we’re going to take the two points. We fought hard until the end. The Romanians gave us difficulties in all areas of the game. and we certainly didn’t give our best performance. But this is also the strength of the French team: in the most difficult moments, we show that we never give up. Now, we are already thinking about Montenegro (this Friday at 6 p.m). We will try to recover well, do a series of massages and cold baths to make the best use of the little time we have.”
“It was hot… I have the feeling that we’re getting into trouble at a time when we shouldn’t,” admitted Chloé Valentini, left winger for Les Bleues. “There is also the appearance of the match, which was stopped for a long time (due to a timing problem). It’s always difficult to stay in it, especially since it falls at a time when they are coming back into the match.. But we managed the end of the match really well.”
“Tomorrow (Friday), It’s Going to Be ‘Hard'”
“We took a lot of two minutes, we were punished a lot, it was a bit strange but we stayed focused. We said it to each other on the bench: it was us and ourselves,” Léna Grandveau, back for Les Bleues, shared. “I think it’s still our state of mind that is striking today. We have managed to be strong, we have a lot of character since the start of this Euro. It’s super important because tomorrow (Friday), it’s going to be ‘hard’ physically. But I think it’s important to play Montenegro, we have plenty of things to show, our character to reveal again, our defense to put in place. It’s one of the best teams to see if we’re up to par. We are ready to challenge them. Even if it’s not easy to play two matches in twenty-four hours… I don’t know if it’s good for the players, but we have no choice. It’s always difficult to come down after a match like this, to get some sleep, but we’ll try. Maybe do a little relaxation with the mental trainer to at least settle down, breathe, and work on the video.”
Coach Sébastien Gardillou echoed his team’s sentiment, voicing satisfaction with both the outcome and the players’ rotation. “I am satisfied with the result and the rotations, we can count on this bench. I didn’t appreciate the refereeing, I didn’t understand. The show could have been more interesting without all these exclusions. It’s disappointing, as it has been since the start of the competition. Romania is a very good rehearsal of what the match against Montenegro will be like. We will prepare as usual, but with less time, and we will try to find the points on which to press.”

**Interviewer:** You mentioned the Romanian team giving you trouble. What specifically were the challenges they presented?
**Laura Flippes:** Their defense was very strong and they didn’t give us a lot of easy opportunities. They really fought hard for every ball. There were moments where we felt the pressure, but like I said, we never gave up.
**Interviewer:** Chloé, you mentioned the difficult atmosphere and that the team seemed to struggle at times when they shouldn’t have. Can you elaborate on that?
**Chloé Valentini:** [Quotes: “It was hot… I have the feeling that we’re getting into trouble at a time when we shouldn’t,” admitted Chloé Valentini, left winger for Les Bleues. “There is also the appearance of the match, which was stopped for a long time (due to a timing problem). **Interviewer:** How will you prepare for Montenegro? They’re obviously another tough opponent.
**Laura Flippes:** We’ll be recovering hard the next couple of days, focus on massages and recovery baths to be ready for Friday. We’ll be studying Montenegro’s strategies and working on our own game plan. Every match in this tournament is important, and we’re going into it with the same determination we showed against Romania.
