Hofstra Women’s Basketball Falls to Florida, Wrapping Winless Road Trip
The Hofstra University women’s basketball team suffered a difficult road loss on Monday, falling 75-48 to a formidable University of Florida squad. The defeat brings the Pride’s record to 2-5 as they wrap up a challenging four-game losing streak on the road.
Struggles Continue Against Seminoles’ Strong Offence
While Florida controlled much of the game, junior guard Chloe Sterling shone for Hofstra, leading the Pride with 19 points. She also paced the team with three assists, contributing significantly to their offensive effort. Emma Von Essen, another junior guard, followed with seven points, hitting a pair of three-pointers and a crucial free throw.
Ramatoulaye Keita, a graduate student, came off the bench to anchor Hofstra’s defense, grabbing eight important rebounds. Freshman sensation LaNae’ Corbett, who started strong earlier in the season, unfortunately continued a recent scoring slump, netting just nine points and committing four personal fouls. Despite the challenges, Corbett contributed seven rebounds.
Turnovers Plague Hofstra’s Offense
Throughout the matchup, missed shots hampered Hofstra’s ability to gain momentum, while Florida capitalized on numerous possessions. Although the Pride opened the game strong with one of Von Essen’s three-pointers just 17 seconds in, their lead was short-lived. Florida senior Ra Shaya Kyle seized control early in the first quarter, putting up a layup that gave the Gators a lead they maintained for the remainder of the game.
Turnovers also posed a significant challenge for Hofstra, who surrendered possession 24 times. Corbett led the team with four turnovers, while Sterling, graduate student Janaia Fargo, and sophomore Micaela Carter each gave the ball away three times.
Florida Dominates With Balanced Attack
On the other side of the court, Florida showcased a powerful, well-rounded offense. Kyle delivered a dominant performance, leading the Gators with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Me’Arah O’Neal followed closely with 14 points, while sophomore Liv McGill and freshman Liv McGill added 12 points and 10 points, respectively. McGill also orchestrated Florida’s attack, leading the team with five assists.
Looking Ahead: A Return to Home Court
Following a tough four-game road trip, Hofstra will return to the friendly confines of the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Sunday, December 8th. They will face a new but competitive opponent in Howard University, a team from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Pride, holders of a 75-61 victory over Yale University, will aim to recapture their winning form in front of their home crowd.
