Detective Joseph Kenny said that the mortally wounded Thompson, 50, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m. He said that the gunman was skilled, able to quickly clear a jam in his 9 mm pistol before continuing his deadly volley.
“Looking at the video, it appears he was competent with the firearm because he was able to fix the malfunction fairly quickly,” Kenny told reporters.
Initially, police believed the suspect fled on a CitiBike, but Lyft, the city’s bike-sharing company, confirmed that bike was not part of its fleet.
