A Champion’s Hunger
This year marked the first time since 2017 that Novak Djokovic didn’t clinch a Grand Slam title. Falling back to seventh place in the world rankings, some might have counted him out.
Yet, even after achieving the elusive Olympic gold medal in Paris, completing his collection of major titles, the Serbian superstar shows no signs of slowing down.
Djokovic’s drive stems from a multitude of factors, including the chance to etch his name in tennis history. He is currently tied with Margaret Court for most Grand Slam titles at 24. With ten triumphs in Melbourne, the Australian Open holds a special place in his heart and the prospect of hoisting the trophy for an eleventh time is certainly a motivating factor. Adding fuel to the fire is the desire to prove himself against the rising stars of the sport: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Experience as a Weapon
“I can still play at the highest level,” Djokovic declared in a recent interview with the “Gazzetta dello Sport”. “Sinner and Alcaraz have established themselves as the two best players in the world, and you can’t forget (Alexander) Zverev.”
Djokovic believes that his deep well of experience will be a key factor in his quest for more glory. He views the trio of Sinner, Alcaraz, and Zverev as the main contenders for future major titles, but remains confident he can challenge them.
“My experience could help me with that,” he said.
Refocus and Readiness
Djokovic will be a familiar face on the tour next year.
“I will play more tournaments again next year and the Grand Slams will be a priority. I will give everything to win, of course only if my body allows it,” he affirmed.
With the retirements of legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray this year, Djokovic carries the torch as the last representative of his generation capable of contending for major trophies.
Murray, a former world number one, will join Djokovic’s team as a kind of “super coach” at least until the Australian Open in January. Murray’s insights and expertise could prove invaluable as Djokovic sets his sights on a record-breaking eleventh Australian Open title when the first slam of the season begins on January 12th.

**Emily:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** So, Djokovic had a historic 2023, winning a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title and achieving that elusive Olympic gold. Many thought this might be the natural point for him to step back a bit. What do you make of this renewed drive for more major titles?
**Emily:** It’s truly remarkable. [[1](https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/11/sport/novak-djokovic-wins-record-breaking-23rd-grand-slam-title-defeating-casper-ruud-in-french-open-final/index.html)]Djokovic has defied expectations time and again throughout his career. Even after reaching such incredible heights, he’s shown time and again that his hunger for competition and his passion for the game remain undimmed.
