Curimaná Cocoa Farmers Modernize Production with New Drying Modules

Cocoa Farmers in Curimaná Uplift Production with New Drying Modules

More than 600 cocoa producers in the Curimaná district are reaping the benefits of three newly-installed drying modules designed to boost production and elevate cocoa quality. These modules, part of a comprehensive project to enhance technical and commercial management practices, are providing a significant boost to the local cocoa industry.

The project features fermentation boxes with a 300 kg capacity and a genius sun-drying system housed under a shaded structure. This innovative design features translucent PVC film, allowing the drying process to occur efficiently while maximizing space, reducing costs, and ensuring high-quality output.

This initiative is carried out in stages, with a total of six modules planned for implementation. The first phase recently saw the completion of the module designated for the Arenalillo Agricultural Cocoa Farmers Association.

Project supervisor Ann Caballero confirmed the successful installation. “Farmers can now implement safe drying practices, leading to superior cocoa quality and compliance with market standards,” she shared.

“This project is truly a game-changer,” said Jhon Satalaya, president of the Arenalillo association. ”

“Thanks to this implementation, we can offer high-quality and safer cocoa. It allows us to comply with safety standards and position ourselves better in the market. It is a positive change for our farmers, promoting good practices in cocoa management.”

Alongside the modules, the project encompasses educational workshops focusing on bolstering productivity. Field schools have been established, equipping farmers with essential skills in manuring and fertilization, optimal harvesting techniques, post-harvest processes, and effective residue management.

With three more modules scheduled for the final phase, the initiative promises to broaden the reach and impact, empowering more cocoa farmers in the region to enhance their production and access wider markets.
