Mbappé Under Fire: French Federation Weighs In

Mbappé Under Fire: French Football Federation President Weighs in on Struggling Star

Kylian Mbappé is facing intense scrutiny as his form continues to falter, raising questions about his future with both club and country. His recent performances for Real Madrid have been particularly worrying, culminating in a missed penalty during a disappointing loss to Athletic Bilbao. The French superstar, visibly downcast after the match, admitted his culpability in the defeat and has been heavily criticized by the Spanish press.

The downturn in Mbappé’s form has not gone unnoticed by Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation. While Diallo acknowledges that Mbappé is simply experiencing a period of “slack,” he believes the 24-year-old’s struggles played a significant role in France‘s semi-final exit at the Euro.

“Compared to the performances he has been able to achieve since the start of his career, his level of performance is lower, and that weighs on the French team,” Diallo stated during an interview on RMC’s “After” program. “I continue to think that if Kylian Mbappé had been at the level of performance he usually has since the start of his career, we might have won the Euro in Germany. This is not the case.”

It’s worth noting that Mbappé entered the Euro dealing with a broken nose sustained in the opening match against Austria, and he was already battling fitness issues coming into the tournament.

Diallo, however, emphasized the importance of deferring to Didier Deschamps, the French national team manager, in addressing Mbappé’s slump. He stated, “It is up to Carlo Ancelotti and Didier Deschamps to put the Bondynois back on track.

“I haven’t spoken with him directly in recent weeks because there have been a lot of exchanges between him and Didier Deschamps who went to Madrid to meet him. So in this respect, I was obviously kept informed of all their exchanges. And decisions which belong to Didier Deschamps to select a player at such and such a time because he thinks for himself as for the group that it is better.”

Diallo concluded by voicing his hope for Mbappé’s resurgence, both for the player’s sake and for the French national team’s aspirations.

“My only concern today is that Kylian Mbappé once again becomes the player likely to win a Ballon d’Or and that he is with us in March (for the quarter-finals of the League of Nations against Croatia) at his best level,” he said.

The coming months will be crucial for Mbappé as he seeks to rediscover his legendary form. His performances will be closely watched by both his club and his country, with the weight of expectation resting heavy on the shoulders of this once-unstoppable star.
