COVID Cases Surge in Dresden as Flu Remains Low

COVID-19 Cases Climb as Flu Remains Dormant

The city’s latest health data reveals a concerning increase in COVID-19 cases, while influenza remains largely absent.

During the last week of November, Saxony in 2021 – health”>Dresden registered 172 new COVID-19 infections confirmed by tests, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of October to 1,372. The seven-day incidence rate currently stands at 28.1, a significant jump from 21.8 recorded in the 47th calendar week.

Hospitalizations on the Rise

Twelve individuals suffering from COVID-19 required hospitalization or tested positive for the virus while already admitted to a clinic. Since October, a total of 226 COVID-19 patients have received treatment in Dresden hospitals.

According to the DIVI register’s data on intensive care beds, 42 COVID-19 patients are currently receiving care in intensive care units across Saxony. Fifteen of these individuals require invasive ventilation. The data also indicates a growing number of COVID-19 ICU patients in Dresden, although specific figures for the city weren’t available.

COVID-19 Fatalities Mount

Tragically, 18 individuals have succumbed to or with COVID-19 in Dresden since the beginning of October. Ten deaths were reported in October and eight in November. The health department routinely adjusts these figures retrospectively to account for cases electronically recorded in later weeks. In the ongoing 2023/2024 cold season, the health department has registered 97 deaths related to COVID-19.

Flu Season Yet to Begin

While COVID-19 cases surge, the flu seems to be taking a backseat for now. Only one person with influenza required hospitalization due to the severity of their condition.

What specific steps can city residents take to mitigate the risks associated with the current COVID-19 surge?

## COVID Cases Surge, Flu ⁣Stays ⁢Silent: ‍Interview with Dr. Emily Chen

**[INTRO MUSIC]**

**HOST:** Welcome back to Healthwatch. We’re⁣ seeing a concerning ‍trend ⁤in the city’s COVID-19⁣ numbers, with cases steadily climbing in recent weeks. Joining us to shed light on this situation is Dr. Emily Chen, infectious disease specialist at City General⁢ Hospital. Dr. Chen, thank ‍you for being here.

**DR. ‌CHEN:** Thank you for having me.

**HOST:** Let’s start with the basics. Can you ‍tell us what we’re seeing in terms of COVID-19 case ‌numbers?

**DR. CHEN:** Certainly. Over the past few weeks, we’ve observed a consistent upward ⁣trend ⁣in new COVID-19 cases. While numbers are ⁢still below what we ⁣experienced during peak periods, this increase is noteworthy and requires‍ our attention.

**HOST:** This is particularly interesting because ‍alongside the rise in COVID cases, the flu seems to⁣ be unusually quiet this year. What’s your take⁢ on that?

**DR. CHEN:** ‍It’s true, influenza activity has been remarkably low this season. There are ⁢a few theories for this, including the success ⁤of vaccination campaigns and ongoing preventive measures like masking and social distancing that may be offering some cross-protection against the‌ flu.

**HOST:** But is there a reason‌ for concern about this COVID surge, ⁣especially with the flu virtually absent?

**DR. CHEN:** Yes, there’s always reason for vigilance. A surge in COVID cases, regardless‍ of flu activity,⁣ puts‌ extra strain on our healthcare system and can lead to more severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations. It’s vital that we continue to encourage vaccination, testing, and responsible preventive measures.

**HOST:** What are your⁣ recommendations for city residents right now?

**DR. CHEN:** Get vaccinated and boosted if eligible. Get tested if you experience any symptoms, and stay home if you’re sick. Continue to practice good hygiene, including frequent ⁤handwashing. And consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings.

**HOST:** ⁢Dr. Chen, thank you for your insights. We appreciate your expertise and guidance.

**DR. CHEN:** My pleasure. Stay safe, everyone.
