A Circle of Friends: Liepāja Theater Brings Holiday Cheer with Musical Celebration
As the festive season approaches, the Liepāja theater is once again preparing to enchant audiences with its beloved Christmas concerts. This year, the stage will come alive with “Circle of Friends,” a heartwarming musical performance debuting on December 14 and running through December 29.
Finding Wonder in the Holiday Chaos
“Moments that allow us to share true wonder are rare treasures,” says director Valters Sīlis, reflecting on the essence of the Christmas season. “Christmas doesn’t need extravagance; it’s about togetherness, creating a warm atmosphere filled with joy and meaningful conversations. Yet, despite yearning for simplicity, we often find ourselves overwhelmed by the whirlwind of holiday demands, left asking, ‘how did it come to this?'”
“During our lives, the meaning of Christmas evolves,” he continues. “As children, we revel as recipients of its magic. As adults, we take on the role of providers, creating these special moments for others. But even when faced with the inevitable challenges of preparation, if someone manages – a spectator, a colleague, a child, a friend – to ignite the true spirit of Christmas, it’s an irreplaceable gift, the heart of the holiday.”
”
Ultimately,” Sīlis emphasizes, “the most important aspect is the shared moment. Being in each other’s company, allowing ourselves vulnerability and honesty, brings a special kind of joy. We want to capture that authentic feeling in our performance; sharing stories, both joyous and humbling, through the power of song. Where this journey takes us – that’s the beauty we hope to discover together.
A Chorus of Voices Brings Holiday Magic to Life
A talented ensemble cast will bring “Circle of Friends” to life. Karīna Tatarinova, Agnese Jēkabsone, Everita Pjata-Gertner, Agnija Dreimane, Signe Dancīte, Laura Jeruma, Mārtiņš Kalita, Rolands Beķeris, Armands Kaušelis, Viktors Ellers, Kārlis Artejevs, and Hugo Puriņš will share their vocal talents.
Ieva Dreimane-Sidare will join them, weaving their voices together in harmonious celebration. The musical tapestry will be richly woven by musicians Miks Akots, Māris Zīlmanis, Raitis Eleris, and Reinis Lapa, under the expert guidance of Normund Kalniņas.
Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce’s heartfelt lyrics will resonate with audiences, while Kristīne Brīniņa’s choreography will add a touch of elegance and movement to the stage. The visual design, masterfully orchestrated by Aurika Feldmane (scenography), Kristīne Bernarde (costumes), Dainars Albužis (video), and Viesturs Andersons (lights), promises to create a truly immersive experience.
– Considering the title mentions “reclaiming the wonder of Christmas,” how does the play aim to achieve this for its audience?
