Daniel Craig called out television host Stephen Colbert for mispronouncing his name for years.
During his appearance on the Late Show to promote his new film Queer, Craig corrected Colbert when he pronounced his last name as Cr-egg instead of Cr-ayg.
Midway through the interview, the Skyfall star asked the host to say his name, and when Stephen did, he replied: “Now you’re doing it right.”
After Stephen asked if he’d been saying Cr-egg all these years, the actor replied: “Yes! It’s a dipthong, I don’t say Colbet.”
Stephen then made Daniel pronounce it several times to understand the difference.
“Ooh, I hear the difference. That is subtle. That is a subtle difference and I apologize,” said the host.
“I don’t want Daniel Cr-ayg mad at me. Daniel Cr-egg? F**k that guy, but Daniel Cr-ayg …” Colbert joked, making the former James Bond laugh.
Stephen asked: “Have I been doing that for six shows?”
Craig replied: “Six shows. Craig, it’s fine, whatever.”
Daniel Craig has also filmed his third *Knives Out* movie, which is an anthology movie series where he solves murder mysteries as detective Benoit Blanc. The third installment is called *Wake Up Dead Man*, and is set for release next year.

How does the concept of diphthongs explain the frequent mispronunciation of Daniel Craig’s last name?
## “Name Game” – A Chat with Linguist Dr. Emily Jones
**Host:** Welcome back to the show, Dr. Jones! We’ve got a trending topic today that’s all about pronunciation, specifically the pronunciation of actor Daniel Craig’s name. He recently appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and corrected the host for mispronouncing his last name for years.
**Dr. Jones:** That’s right! It seems even celebrities can have their names butchered occasionally. This situation highlights how tricky pronunciation can be, especially with names that have less common phonetic elements.
**Host:** So, Daniel Craig prefers “Cr-ayg” with that rhyming diphthong, not the “Cr-egg” that Colbert had been using. What exactly is a diphthong, Dr. Jones, and why do they cause so much trouble?
**Dr. Jones:** A diphthong is a vowel sound that glides from one vowel sound to another in a single syllable. In this case, “ayg” smoothly blends the ”a” sound, as in “father,” with the “i” sound, as in “bit,” within a single syllable.
These sounds are subtle and can be easily mistaken, especially when we’re accustomed to hearing names pronounced in a specific way.
**Host:** It’s fascinating how our ears can get used to mispronunciations, isn’t it?
**Dr. Jones:** Absolutely. Repetition often reinforces incorrect pronunciation, making it harder to identify and correct later on.
It’s commendable that Daniel Craig addressed this issue directly. It serves as a reminder that pronunciation matters and that respecting how individuals want their names pronounced is a key aspect of courtesy and respect.
**Host:** Well said, Dr. Jones. Thank you for shedding light on this interesting linguistic quirk! Maybe Stephen Colbert will even master that diphthong now!
