Vienna Blood: Curtain Call for Detective Duo
The hit series “Vienna Blood” is coming to an end after four successful seasons, bidding farewell to the unlikely investigative duo of Oskar Rheinhardt and Max Liebermann. The final two-part episode, titled “Mephisto,” will air on December 20th and 21st.
A Remarkable Journey Ends
“Vienna Blood”, a jewel in the crown of ORF programming, originally sparked its creator’s imagination 13 years ago. The adaptation of Frank Tallis’ “Max Liebermann” novels had a long journey to the screen.
“We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved,” said producer Oliver Auspitz, choosing his words carefully when asked about the prospect of future installments. “This is definitely a turning point. Nowadays you can’t foresee so many things.” A pause, and then a hopeful whisper added: “But we’re leaving a little back door open.”
The Power of a Subtle Bromance
Director Umut Dağ, who helmed two episodes in the first season and returned for the final chapter, reflected on the bond forged by the cast and crew over the years, saying,
“After all this time, a basis of trust has been formed that allows you to start somewhere completely different. We were able to work at a level at the finale that might not otherwise have been possible.”
For Dağ, the finale holds a powerful secret and mystery: “It was fun to break that mystery apart and see what’s behind it,” he said, referencing “the really big twist at the end.” He attributes the international success of the series to the unique combination of懦 Viennese charm and the playful chemistry between the actors. Matthew Beard portrays the analytical psychoanalyst Max Liebermann, while Jürgen Maurer embodies the astute detective Oskar Rheinhardt.
“The chemistry between Jürgen Maurer and Matthew Beard is really special,” said Dağ. “They have such a nice bromance. They tease each other and still get along great. This humorous and yet mysterious mix is a unique mix.”
Maurer agrees. “The international success was overwhelming! I’ve received calls from friends in Australia who saw me on TV there,” he laughed. Despite the newfound overseas recognition, Maurer keeps his feet on the ground: “I’m perhaps under-ambitious, I’m rather skeptical about this ‘Oh, now Hollywood’ megalomania that some colleagues fall into.”
Maurer’s observations are echoed by could be seen in the posters and press stills, which subtly conveyed the partnership at the heart of the series. Vivienrentials, who worked closely with the costumes and sets to accurately recreate the era.
A Farewell to Vienna’s Golden Age
Dağ reflected on the rich history that brought the series to life. “Vienna still has incredible value for filmmakers. You can put a camera anywhere and find something appropriate for that time.
The warmth of the city punctuated with a hint of melancholy weaves itself through the words of Screenwriter Steve Thompson.
“You have to be able to let things go. If you say that’s it, then that’s it,” Thompson mused. “Then I look forward to the next thing.”
For Maria Köstlinger, who plays a key role in the final season, the finale brings a sense of acceptance: “After a certain time, things are simply told, and then you have to accept that.”
How did the creators of “Vienna Blood” plan to leave a “back door open” for a possible continuation of the series, despite the caption “The Final Curtain Call”?
