Now you can soon follow the construction of the giant attraction

Now you can soon follow the construction of the giant attraction

Now we have to arm ourselves with patience and put another half year on top of it.

On the other hand, the process will very soon become very concrete for all those who are looking forward to following the transformation of the historic industrial plant up close.

Friday 13 December at 11, the construction of Denmark’s new art gallery, Kunsthal Spritten, will be started.

The financing of the overall project has been secured, all agreements concluded, and the transformation can thus begin.

And it is experienced advisers who will transform the distillery, which is protected and designated as a national industrial monument.

As overall consultant, the art gallery’s management and the municipality have chosen Praksis Arkitekter, known for, among other things, the reconstruction of the Svinkløv Badehotel and the conversion of the Maltfabrikken in Ebeltoft, while the construction company NCC is at the forefront of the conversion into an art gallery.

The reasons for the major delays along the way are, among other things, the shutdowns during Covid 19 and a sharp increase in the price of building materials, and the project is extremely complex both in terms of engineering and authorities. Photo: Lars Pauli

The main contributor to the art gallery is, in addition to Aalborg Municipality, Realdania, which highlights Kunsthal Spritten as a very special project:

– The road to this has been long, but all parties have worked hard to find the solutions that mean that we can now start a completely unique project, where a world-renowned artist performs his greatest work ever and builds it together with the greatest protected industrial plants in Denmark, says Nina Kovsted Helk, director of philanthropy at Realdania, in a press release.

Will lift Aalborg

When the art gallery and the work are finished, they will become a destination of international caliber that is more than important for Aalborg, states Mayor Lasse Frimand Jensen (S) in a press release.

– The conversion of the old distillery into an art gallery emphasizes how we take our industrial heritage into the future. With the transformed building, Aalborg gets a completely unique experience attraction, which we are convinced will put the city on the world map and be a significant engine in creating growth and urban development, he says in the press release.

Jes Lunde (R), councilor for Health and Culture, is also excited.

– It has been a long process, but now we are beginning to be able to glimpse what both the art gallery and the artwork will look like. We get a unique opportunity to create completely new stories about the city, and I look forward to opening the doors, he says.

The artwork Cloud City Aalborg was created by Tomás Saraceno and will be his largest permanent work to date. It is supported by a number of foundations, with the Obelske Familiefond as the main contributor. The entire project is carried out with the permission of the Danish Palaces and Culture Agency. Floating over the fjord

A large part of the transformation of Spritten is the 35-metre-high work of art, Cloud City Aalborg, designed by the internationally recognized artist Tomás Saraceno.

It is precisely the fusion of art and architecture that has turned the artist on to the project.

– I can’t think of any other sculpture of this size where more than a hundred people can enter a space of colorful imagination together. A social experiment that expands the free public space to a vertical dimension and invites everyone to float over the fjord like water drops, says Tomás Saraceno.

Construction is starting now and is expected to last just over two years. The total project amount is DKK 350 million. DKK

The start of construction will be marked at an event at Spritten on 13 December at 11 to 13, which is open to everyone.
