Police Stop Hundreds of GC Fans in Zurich Ahead of Derby

Tension Grips Zurich as Rival Fan Marches Spark Security Concerns

Zurich experienced heightened security measures ahead of a recent football match as rival fan groups clashed, leading to police intervention and property damage. Despite warnings from authorities, supporters of two local teams, FCZ and GC, gathered in separate locations, prompting concerns about potential confrontations.

Zurich city police proactively announced they would not tolerate any gatherings or marches from Josefswiese, a central location both fan camps had initially planned to converge on.

“The city police spoke of an ‘enormous security risk’ given this initial situation,” a statement from the police read.

As the tension mounted, FCZ supporters embarked on a march from Klingenpark toward the Letzigrund stadium, their procession marked by the heavy use of pyrotechnics. Meanwhile, the GC fan march was met with a firm police response on the Duttweiler Bridge.

A total of 591 individuals were checked, with police confiscating significant quantities of masks and pyrotechnic materials. Three individuals were temporarily detained as a result of the operation.

Adding to the city’s unrest, an unauthorized demonstration snaked its way through District 4, originating from Helvetiaplatz. This movement was marred by instances of property damage, including the use of fireworks and spraying. Public transportation services in the affected areas were also disrupted by the fan marches.

“Several hundred people were checked,” Marc Surber from the media service of the Zurich city police told reporters earlier on Saturday evening.

However, the evening concluded on a quieter note, with the city police praising the collaborative effort with cantonal and transport police in managing the large-scale operation.
