Tragedy struck the Welches, Oregon, community as the body of 61-year-old Susan Lane-Fournier was discovered over the weekend.

Lane-Fournier, fondly known as “Phoenix” by friends, was reported missing on November 22 after failing to report for work. Concern quickly turned to alarm when her white Ford F-250 truck was spotted parked near East Salmon River Road close to the Green Canyon Way Trail south of Welches. A dedicated hiker, Lane-Fournier was believed to have been hiking in the area with her two Malinois-mix dogs.

Thorough Search Efforts End in Heartbreaking Discovery

Authorities immediately mobilized a comprehensive search operation. Over 20 volunteers and teams from Clackamas County Search and Rescue tirelessly combed the rugged terrain.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, including temperatures dipping into the 30s, the search efforts continued for several days, covering over 800 hours before making a devastating discovery. Deputies found the remains that later confirmed to be those of Lane-Fournier near East Highway 26 and East Miller Road in the Welches area.

Homicide Investigation Launched

As the community reeled from the devastating news, the Sheriff’s Office turned its attention to a homicide investigation.

Spouse Arrested and Charged

Michel Fournier, Lane-Fournier’s 71-year-old husband, became the focus of the investigation. He was arrested and booked into Clackamas County Jail without bail. The medical examiner, following an autopsy, confirmed the manner of death as a homicide.
