What methods will Google Photos now use to estimate locations for photos without embedded GPS data?
## Google Photos Privacy Update: A Q&A with David “Dave” Camera
**David “Dave” Camera**, a privacy advocate and technology blogger, joins us today to discuss recent changes in how Google Photos handles location data in your images.
**Interviewer:** Welcome, Dave. Google Photos recently announced a change in how location data is estimated for images without embedded GPS information. Can you walk us through this change?
**Dave:** Absolutely. Google Photos used to rely heavily on your Location History, an optional Google account setting that tracks your whereabouts, to estimate locations for photos without GPS tags. However, in a recent update, they’re moving away from this practice.
**Interviewer:** Why this shift?
**Dave:** This change comes amidst growing privacy concerns about how tech companies collect and use location data [[1](https://9to5google.com/2022/12/06/google-photos-location-estimates/)]. Google’s decision to limit its reliance on Location History for location estimation in Photos is a welcome move towards giving users more control over their location privacy.
**Interviewer**: So, what does this mean for Google Photos users?
**Dave:** It means Google will now focus on other clues within the image itself, like visual landmarks or other metadata, to estimate location.
**Interviewer:** Does this mean location data for older photos without GPS tags will be removed?
**Dave:** It’s unlikely. Google will likely maintain the existing estimated locations but won’t update them proactively based on your Location History going forward.
**Interviewer:** Any final thoughts for our viewers?
**Dave:** Always review your privacy settings on any platform that stores your data. While Google’s move is a positive step towards improving privacy, it’s important to be mindful of how all your data is being used.
**Interviewer:**
Thank you, Dave, for providing your insights on this important topic.
