Four alleged members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) were captured and sent to prison for their alleged participation in the murder of National Police lieutenant Jorge Humberto Muñoz Gómez, which occurred on November 14 in the south of Bolívar. In addition, those detained would be involved in the recruitment and use of minors for criminal activities in the region.
The specialized prosecutor’s office against criminal organizations presented the detainees before a guarantee control judge. The defendants are Jhon Fredys Tangarife Rodríguez, Yurleidis Aguas Pérez, José Hermes Chávez Río and Jhon Estiven González Graciano, who were allegedly part of the armed structure of the ELN known as the ‘Darío de Jesús Ramírez Castro’ war front.
The capture of the individuals occurred after an armed confrontation between the National Police and members of the illegal armed group in a rural area of San Pablo, Bolívar. During the exchange of fire, Lieutenant Muñoz Gómez lost his life and three other uniformed officers were injured. Three minors who remained in the custody of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute (ICBF) were also rescued.
The Prosecutor’s Office charged the detainees with several serious crimes, including aggravated homicide, attempted aggravated homicide, rebellion, manufacturing, trafficking and carrying of weapons for the exclusive use of the Armed Forces, aggravated explosives, and use of minors to commit crimes. . However, the defendants did not accept the charges.
The authorities are carrying out an exhaustive investigation, which has revealed that the ‘Darío de Jesús Ramírez Castro’ war front would be involved in a series of illicit activities in the south of Bolívar, such as drug trafficking, extortion collection, and other forms of illegal income.
This confrontation highlights the growing violence in some areas of the country where illegal armed groups, such as the ELN, remain a constant threat. Territorial control and drug trafficking continue to be central activities of these groups, who also resort to the forced recruitment of minors for their criminal activities.

What are the potential implications of the ELN’s alleged recruitment of minors in Bolivar?
## Interview: ELN Arrests in Bolívar
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Joining us today is Dr. Ana Silva, a security analyst specializing in guerrilla activity in Colombia. Dr. Silva, recent news reports indicate the arrest of four individuals allegedly connected to the ELN for the murder of a police lieutenant in Bolivar. Can you shed some light on the significance of this event?
**Dr. Silva:** Certainly. The arrest of these individuals, allegedly belonging to the ELN’s ‘Darío de Jesús Ramírez Castro’ war front [[2]], is a significant development. This front has been growing in strength in the southern Bolivar region, as reported by Insight Crime [[1]]. The ELN’s presence there dates back to the late 1960s, and they have been expanding their influence in recent years. This arrest, specifically for the murder of Lieutenant Muñoz Gómez and the alleged recruitment of minors, could be a turning point in disrupting their activities in the region.
**Host:** You mentioned the recruitment of minors. What are the implications of this accusation against the ELN members?
**Dr. Silva:** The use of minors in armed conflict is a serious human rights violation. It demonstrates the ELN’s disregard for international law and their willingness to exploit vulnerable populations. The Colombian government has been struggling to dismantle this practice, and these arrests could provide valuable information about the ELN’s recruitment tactics and networks.
**Host:** What does this arrest mean for the overall security situation in Bolivar?
**Dr. Silva:** This arrest is a positive step, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. The ELN remains a significant threat in Bolivar, particularly in the south. Further investigations and arrests are needed to dismantle their network and ensure the safety of the local population.
**Host:** Dr. Silva, thank you for your insights. This is certainly a story we will be following closely.
**Dr. Silva:** My pleasure.
